Just came back from quick wet ride and Charlie was wandering round the yard nibbling at hay net and watching me tidy up. He started rubbing on open door of stable, wandered in there and got down to roll (gate was open to field for him to roll there). Next thing I heard the most almighty bang and when I looked he had got himself cast. He struggled for 2 or 3 good bouts but then just lay there and I honestly thought he'd colicked or broken something. I didn't want to go in because I know I could have been injured, so managed to just clip a lead rope onto his rug catch and when he next struggled I pulled too and thankfully he swung over and got up. He had obviously given himself a good fright so I kept him in for an hour to watch him and have now just let him out into the small paddock with a small hay net to keep an eye on him.

Scary stuff - just so glad he's ok.

Really hoping he'll be ok in the stable (12' x 16') overnight come winter now - bit worried tbh.

One of my big broodmares gets cast out in the middle of the field every single winter! She gets to a stage where she is so round and then she rolls (almost in the same spot) and gets stuck upside down in the ice/snow. I've had to dig her out a couple of times and then rope her legs and pull her over. Not so bad with smaller horses but a big heavily pregnant TB has me puffing a bit lol! All of my barns/shelters/stables have anti-cast strips and none have ever got cast inside, always out in the fields. I have a couple of horses who seem prone to getting themselves in pickles but they're all great and just wait till I get there to pull them out.

It could just be one of those freak things or he could be one who likes to get himself stuck... I had a filly who did! lol!

Get in the practice of making nice big firm banks which should help prevent it happening again... ;) your box is nice and big so should easily accomodate this :)

My mare once got 'kind of' cast in the barn. I was working outside and I could hear her grunting in a cranky way, she usually did this when the stallion was trying to be affectionate (she's a grumpy so and so). Anyway, it dawned on me that he usually gave up after the 3rd telling off so I went into the barn and she was semi-cast against the far wall, the stallion was taking advantage and kissing her face, it was so funny he would kiss her and she would roll her eyes and grunt at him. Basically he was blocking her - once I moved him off she got up OK. He looked so smug!

One of mine would regularly get cast and wriggle his way out of it - I usually just watched him laughing as he wriggled and squiggled until able to get up.

A horse getting cast is scary but at least your lad realised he was stuck and didnt struggle wildly. Our usual proceedure at work is to get one of the lads to kneel on the horses neck to keep it down until we can get some ropes round the legs and heave the donkey out of its predicament. The main thing to do is keep calm so the horse doesnt become more distressed.

I have a horse who wears an anti cast roller. I got fed up after numerous casting episodes. Stupid creature has a huge box but always rolls against a wall.

The roping EKW mentions needs adding to. It is a dangerous thing to do if you are not experienced and you do need to know which legs to rope.

A horse cast is scary and you must must think own safety all time. i was told get help(with mobiles far easier than years gone by :) ) . Yes you if poss rope leg nearest wall ideally so can pull over but that can sometimes be difficult . last one i found cast(through colic and was thrashing) i had to gently sit on head (positioned ideally for that ) till help came and with YO we roped him over. but think safety all time as you are no help if knocked out on floor :)

Ive just stumbled on this thread,I had a scare with another liveries pony last night and was checking up that what I would have done was correct.

I had fetched another liveries horses in last night, put them in their stables, and did my own horses, just as I was about to leave i popped into the bottom block to check they were both ok but as it was dark and I didn't want to disturb them by putting the light on I could make out the shadow of the larger horse, but then i hard an almightly rustling and hooves banging on concrete, I stuck my head over the the pony's stable to be just able to make out in the darkness he was stuck!!!! i dashed quickly to put the light on, but he had managed to wriggle himself free.

He was stood looking quite dazed and puffing, so i went into his stable and checked him over and gave him some fuss, once he had calmed down I turned out the lights and left, and checked him again this morning at 6.30am.

I must admit it was quite a scare and I was alone at the yard, as I dashed back to his stable i grabbed a leadrope on the way with the intention of lashing his legs to pull him over, but thinking about it now even with a 12/13hh pony would I have managed it alone? what would I have done
