He's aged 5, growing and changing shape, has changed massively in the last 6 months, typical Irish cob type. I really prefer leather saddles but wonder if a synthetic with a changeable gullet is the more sensible choice. Otherwise was thinking maybe a secondhand leather - which makes and models are the right sort of shape, please?

i have a HW cob and i got him a leather barnsby saddle last year waited till he was 9 and had def stopped changing shape before that he just had a throwgood synthetic

My saddle fitter swears by the Exselle leather saddles for cobs - perhaps you could find a 2nd hand one somewhere? They're not actually a fortune new - I think I paid £700 for mine.
I've been really happy with mine - it's a nice everyday saddle, decent enough quality & fits well.

Unfortunately he is still going to keep growing and changing shape so you can either go for the bates with the interchangeable gullet or try the Ideal Highland and Cob saddle but make sure you get it regularly checked they can be re and de stuffed as long as the tree fits

Ive just got a new cob saddle for my cob, its designed by thorowgood and made by Kent and Masters its beautiful soft english havana leather and so comfy, it is adjustable too, so as she changes shape i can have the gullet changed, girth strap position altered and it has shims too it really is a lovely cob saddle!! Im over the moon with it. Have a look... http://kentandmasters.co.uk/kent-cob-gp.php

There are nice ranges of leather saddles with the same changeability as synthetic saddles, such as Fairfax and kent&Masters.
