I have a 13.3 welsh x who has no energy, at the mo hes getting a handfull of chaff and a scoop of pasture mi and a shed load of grass!!!

i want to change his feed to give him a bit of a boost, but not sure what. being a cob hes prone to puting weight on very quickly, hes worked 5 - 6 times a week.

people at my yard have said to try race horse mix, oats or blue chip.

any advice?

Oats.

Or, our Little Lad always responds well to anything with molasses in it

Try oats first, some react to them some don't! Some horses hot up on even alfa a! My mare is very laid back even competition mix doesn't hot her up! So in full competition work I give her a cup of micro feed (rocket fuel!!) and that seems to do the trick, she gets the rest of her nutrient and vitamin requirements from a feed balancer and free access to a horslyx.

The problem is that many cobs just turn the calories they are fed into fat.
It might be better to try to get him to lose weight. As he becomes thinner and fitter he may have more energy.

Maybe hes just getting too much grass, and feeling lathargic. My cob has been known to get very out of puff very quickly, his whole routine has now been changed and although he doesnt do strenuous work he is much fitter and more alert. He is in for 18hours a day with good quality haylage he gets fed once a day with alpha a and mix gets hacked out in work up hill and down dale 5 times a week if schooling is required this is replaced once a week either flat or jumping. In 3 months he has developed lots more muscle and has a lot more stamina.
It is hard work for them to be out all day munching and they always feel bloated especially if they are greedy cobs like mine, who would eat and eat until he burst!
