my cushings pony..

thankyou... not sure what the levels should be, but it sounds good... very expencive, hes on 1, 1mg a day.. i can get them cheaper online.. £136.69 vet wanted £209..

Great news TM! My mare's original bloods were 97, then came down to 18 so my vet recommended I dropped the dosage from 1mg to half that, been 5 weeks on the half dosage and levels still at only 22. Definately worth the money!

my cushings pony had his second round of blood results yesterday and by miracle his levels have gone from 71 (the 'norm' should have been around 43) down to 20.9 ('norm' 29) with only 250mcg of pergolide! so it was nice to have a good news phone call from the vet for once and he highlighted his tablets will currently cost me 25p a day until he's tested again...even better!:D

My vet can't prescribe it either... pergolide is licensed for people, and is now licensed under the name Prascend for equine use.
I think by law, vets have no option but to prescibe Prascend as the licensed version - however there may be a loophole if your horse/pony was diagnosed prior to the change in the law ... not 100% sure on the last point though.

I am now getting Prascend online at £136.99 - my vet wanted to charge £211.00... cheeky sods (even one of their own vets buys it online for her own pony as it's cheaper for her too??!?!!?)

vet said the only way to get pergolide is if the prascend was'nt working... then i said oh the prascend is working is it.. nudge nudge. he just laughed...

Prascend is only available in 1mg tablets, so if the other poster's vet felt a lower dose was appropriate then there is justification for using pergolide 250mcg tablets.

This is how I managed to get my pony onto pergolide. Prascend isn't available in such a small dose, and I explained to my vet about the cost etc etc so he put his thinking cap on and said starting with the minimum pergolide will mean he is allowed to continue prescribing it once he has started:D We both agreed that 250mcg would probably have no significant effect on his levels but it would get us onto it. HOWEVER by miracle, it has levelled him out:) which even the vet was surprised about slightly! I think we picked up the cushings very early as the mild laminitic 3 day spell was his tell tale sign and the earlier you start to control their levels, the easier it is.

Thanks Sophstar, that's really interesting. Wish my vet had been so canny.
My shetland started on 500mcg (the Prascend tablet can be split in half at the groove very easily). Unluckily for me, 3 blood tests later he's levelled at 1mg tablet.
He wasn't showing obvious symptoms, and the vet was surprised when I asked for him to be tested.
