my dog is limping on & off-any ideas?

ok so yesterday I went out to do horses & left my 7 year old rescue greyhound lying on the sofa (as usual), came back in an hour later & she was limping & I mean limping as she couldn't put any weight on her front left paw.Did cold compress etc as advised.my Dad said she was fine when she got of sofa but was limping when she got up off her mat.I went out again last night & when I came back in she was normal & acting normally, this morning she was charging round like a loony, but she hasjust been having an afternoon nap & got up & is limping pitifully again.any ideas what might cause on/off pain like this-am really worried.I didn't take her to vet as she was normal up until 4 pm.Thanks for reading!:confused::(
 
until you see the vet i wouldnt let her fun around or jump up could be making whatever worse..could be muscle..maybe check her from tip of nail up until her back and neck area...as just been said its not alway the leg which is causing her pain

my friends lab was limping on and off i dsicovered she had slice her claw so every time she walked(her naills are long) it just caught her..so the vet had cut it past the wick..i would of done it myself but my clippers were blunt
 
As greyhounds are very fine dogs their joints are very fine too, and it could be one of her joins popping out especially if the ball socket is very shallow. Its more common in terriers, but it would explain the randomness and extreme pain. If not feel all the leggy bits on affected leg and watch carefully for any indication of discomfort of pain. Also check all claws and dew claws for rips, snags and breakages. Checking the paw pad is also a good idea, checking the pad itself for puncture wounds, forreign bodies or cuts, check between the pads too, looking carefully because often sharp/ uncomfortable things can get lodged/ stuck in and cause pain, but usually that kind of pain is chronic not intermittant. If all this doesn't help then I do strongly advise taking her to the vets! I hope this helps you! Poppy :)
 
Ah, I worked in a vets surgery for a bit and we once had a greyhound in that was limping like the one described in the original post, and that was what she told me and my sister, who is a vet nurse and has been for many years, also backs this up. It could be arthritis, though I'm no vet and if it continues I recommend seeing one :) :)
