The photo above was the condition he was in when we first brought him back to the yard, he had thrush and his eye was just watering all the time.

This is Tusculum about 5 weeks after being with us, starting to have energy and running around the paddock.

This is Tusculum riding a few weeks of having him was such a god sent.

This was take last weekend when we had the hot weather, showing hardly no ribs and mane and tail are now in great condition. This horse is the perfect, knowing he is my first ex-racehorse and knowing I've had to start back to basics with retraining him.

Would love to hear everyones thoughts and feelings, good or bad as always up for advice and everyones opinion.

Thankyou. He is 10 years old all I know from his racing experience was he was just a flat horse. won 41k, not sure why retired. I know that he was going to be sent to the meat man but a friend of mine rescued a couple of them beforehand. He has come on very well with weight and I had to hold him up for the farrier as he was so poor he nearly fell to the floor.
I've rode him around the yard for a couple of weeks, just so he got used to me. We started having problems a couple of weeks ago where his anxiety as gone up and will not go anywhere if my cob isn't in sight, so we are now doing a little bit of longreining and lunging and going to gradually take the cob out of sight. Just need him to get a bit of trust in me and to know that by me being there he is not in any danger. Thanks

Well done you for giving him a second chance in life and he does look considerably better now. Going back to basics is absolutely the right thing to do as he will never have been ridden "properly" as we know it and will need to be shown every step of the way. He's probably never been ridden alone, racers generally go out in a string, so that's something you will have to teach him as well.

The only concern I have is that his front feet are rather long in the toe. His footshape in your first photo is good, but now it seems too long in the toe - is he due to be trimmed soon?

He's just had his feet trimmed and shod. farrier had to make a special show for one of his feet, not good on knowing the reason why but he said its common for thoroughbreds.

Well done you, he looks lovely (apart from those long toes ;)) and you are doing a brilliant job with him.

Welcome to the club, its not very exclusive being in the 'ex racer' club but the support and good will you get makes it the best club in the world and I for one am very proud to be in it :D
