My farrier is a star.........horse didn't do too bad either...........

We got loan horse shod today.Owner said horse needed fully sedated to do 4 feet or sedalin paste do 2 feet then next time sedalin paste do other 2 feet.apparently was a right cow to shoe.
Did get sedalin from vet but farrier poo pooed it as tho he believes it has a place doesn't think it works through issues if horse is sedated all time so wanted to try it without first.There are some farriers if your horse breaks wind the wrong way they want it sedated.(understand their point if its nuts safety first etc)
Anyway farrier just spent time holding up foot didn't let go til horse stood then did same with tapping by time on 2nd shoe mare was relaxed and eating hay.At no time did my farrier hit or bully horse just calmly quietly held leg,if horse moved so did he with it.
Left it at 2 feet being shod as didn't want to temp fate and horse had been ever so good left it on a good note.

My Farrier is very good, however if the horse pratts around too much for long enough it gets a smack with the hammer shaft, I dont mind as he's only has to do it once and it was only one good smack, seemed to do the trick.
 
What a star .... I have a good farrier now but have had some in the past who should never have been let near a horse!
Let's hope the next visit from your farrier is as successful!
 
I'm so pleased that it all went well; it's so good to finish on a high note! I've been having my own shoeing worries:

My wonderful wonderful farrier who took so much time and effort settling our young mare who came to us with a problem lifting her off hind, even popping in "when passing" to "remind her about it" and who always made my paranoid Welsh feel so secure he would doze off whilst being shod, had left for an exciting new career. I was gutted, especially as I'd just bought a good new mare with terrible feet which I knew he would sort out. I wish him well but such gentle men are hard to find in farrier form and I was worried for my horses.

The new farrier has been today and he is just as sweet and gentle and fantastic with the horses. I'm so pleased and feel so lucky to have found two such fantastic farriers who are so considerate both to the horses and of their conformation and shoeing needs. It was a stressy time for me because I've now got two "new" horses that I've not had shod before. Neither are straightforward but he dealt with both of them.

One very happy horse owner today!
 
My last 2 farriers were fab when mine were being little monkeys!
The apprentices (who do them now) aren't too bad either....and theres plenty of them there to anchor a naughty horse down if needs be

I have a fantastic farrier like that now - unlike one who belted my welsh a when she teetered. They are so worth keeping hold of.
 
I'm just amazed that our farrier keeps coming back to trim our big girl, she is a night mare and a 17hh ShirexClydesdale who is neurotic about her feet being lifted, is a real mennace. But he keeps on trying.

Its great when you get a good 'un isn't it.
He has given them a smack but only if approriate to that horsebut he always gives them a hug afterwards .Sweet!!
Told him apparently other farriers reccomend him for problem horses as he has more patience than them.He says that good but he'd rather not have a pile of hard to shoe horses

Hope he doesn't retire early (50 last yr) as he's good,cheaper than others in area actually turns up day/time he says(which seems to be a big problem for some of farriers up here!!)and a nice guy
 
My farrier is also great but insists that the owner trains the horse to behave itself before he comes as he says it's not his job to train it, which is true enough. Understandable if the horse is scared of blokes (and you're not one!), strangers, or hot shoeing!
