My baby girl had choke, what a horrible experience and one i dont want to go through again...I got a call from one of the other owners to say she thought Cerys had choke, on my arrival she was very dull, shaking, tucked up and masses of green slime coming out of her nose/mouth... When i led her from the field to a fenced off area she was coughing a very dry cough. I phoned the vet and arranged an emergency call out. To my relief she had some water, a coughing fit ,bringing some grass up and perked right up...so i cancelled the vet. I monitored her for a couple hours and she wasnt herself, so i went home and a myself and another owner checked on her reguarly...she was snotting again, so i rugged her up, as she was shaking and weather was drizzly (There are no stables ). Vet had advised normally clears within 24 hrs and this had been the experience of other owners at the yard. When i got up there the following morning, no improvements apart from snot was now white instead of green, so i called the vet for an emergency call. The vet came out ,sedated and tubed her , but was hitting a blockage and when Cerys coughed nothing came up...so off to the vet hospital we went ! :-( The vet was concerned that she could get pneumonia if any of the snot had leaked into her lungs..The weather was pouring and my poor friend whom was poorly, towed the trailer. On arrival at the clinic they scoped her and cleared the blockage, they showed me the inflammation and scaring of her throat and also found in her tummy that some of the veins were very inflammed/large. She is now home on painkillers/antibiotics and anti inflammatories. I cant believe the weight she has lost, in two days. My poor girlie... The vets want to rescope her in 4weeks time and they are checking her again next thursday. I really regret not getting the vet out the first day, i was lucky that she didnt get pneumonia and seems to be back to her old self. Shes only allowed sloppy fibre foods and grass at the moment.... luckily the grass is good where she is so hopefully she'll put the weight back on soon. Im now concerned she could be prone to it and what i could do to help prevent it... she has picked up the bad habit from her dam of chewing up wood, which probably caused the choke in first place...apart from putting foul tasting stuff on the wood, is there anything else i could do/use to stop her ? What are all your experiences of choke/crib biting ?

Hiya, just received my vets bill for emergency treatment on bank holiday Monday. First time my pony has suffered choke and very scary. Luckily it was cleared in the field by the tubing and he has suffered no lasting problems. It's just bad luck I think. He was cold wet and shivering, I gave him some haylage to warm him up and he bolted it..rest is history and my pocket £200+ lighter. Good luck for a good recovery
