ive had My 3 yr old welsh sec a since weaning. She was backed, ridden and even managed a couple of ridden shows last year but now has decided to do nothing but look at her feet when shes out. her head is held really low when tacked up but fine when on the lead rein. She also recently started to shake when my daughter gets on her but stops as soon as she gets off. We initially thought her shape had changed and therefore her saddle and bridle need chaning but she takes to shaking even when ridden bareback. Not sure whether she is being cheeky and am reluctant to let her think that she can get a rider off by shaking if theres nothing wrong with her. Any suggestions?

Do you mean she shakes constantly, like a nervous shake, or that she shakes violently as if trying to rid herself of the rider (or of an itch)?
TBH I would ask your vet to check her over, I've found over the years that if something doesn't seem quite right, it usually isn't.
It does sound as though she might have some sort of back problem.
Fingers crossed it's easily sorted.

Sorry if im wrong but it doesn't sound like you've had the vet or physio out from your post

before you worry about her 'getting away with it' i think teeth, back, legs and neck all need checking to make sure she isn't in pain...

No She doesnt shake constantly. In fact we used to go for quite a hack before she did it but my daughter finds it difficult to balance when she shakes so she keeps getting off. Now it seems everytime you ask her to do anything she doesnt want to do she gives a quick shake. A quick quite violent one. I was thinking of trying to get my daughter to sit tight once or twice and see if she stops in case she is just trying to get her off but if not I think the vets the next logical step. Thanks for your advice.

i would get the vet to do a full work up to get to the bottom of this, she was obviously broken quite young if she managed a few ridden shows when 3!!!!!!!!!!!! oopps most shows have a ridden age limit of 4 for the good of the pony. has she grown a lot recently? i really do think your vet is your first port of call. hope you get the answer.

we have a pony that went thru phase like this years ago it transpired she had calcium defficiency, apparently its more common in cattle.

the vet only had to treat her twice and was easily sorted.

good luck & i hope for her sake shes just being cheeky.
