And its about hats!

For [****]'s sake, people do not need to preach to every tom, dick and harry that they are going to get braindamage and die. They probably know and it is their conscious descision. You don't need to tell them.

Sorry very short rant over.

Btw, I practically always wear my hat and just think that people have the right not to.

I agree to a point - but I think that if they are teaching / riding around children, they should set an example to those who are impressionable. I never ride without mine, my choice, but I do ride in a beagler when doing dressage. I take responsibility for my own head - children should be taught the same. But you're right, I hate being preached at!

sophos, its all very well saying that, but if you or anyone fell off and got injured to a point whereby your quality of life was affected, would you not considering sueing if you could?

sophos, you sound very young :S have you ever had a very bad horse ridign accident?? my friend had her life saved by her helmet, two horses in the yard, two riders on board, one with hat, one with out, load noise, horses bolt, both fall off, one dies, one lives, very sad.

I ALWAYS wear a helmet, mine saved my life just the other day a horse reared with me...really unexpected..fell off onto concrete and smaked my head on the corner of the stone mounting block my hat now has a hole in it! Luckilly i have loads

I dont think i would have been posting this if i hadnt had my hat on!!

Totally agree, I spend a lot of money on my cross country hat - my last one saved my life without a word of a lie. I fell on my face, horse landed on me and kicked me in the head with studs in. Dent in hat was massive and deep - showed it to doctor who said if hat hadn't been so well made, I'd be dead. Bought the best one to replace it!! And yes, Northampton rocks!!

I agree wholeheartedly. If a person makes a decision to not wear a hat, literally on their head be it. Its not for anyone else to pontificate about.

I wear my hat all the time, the only time I don't is when I ride the horses down to the field! I was just browsing on youtube and it REALLY annoyed me how many people just preached at the people.

sophos how old are you? do you not think about the consequences of your action upon other peoples? its a very selfish view 'my head my life'. maybe your life, but your life affects others, friends, family, loved ones. its not all about you.

i suggest you calm down and get off your soap box, your not amusing anyone...*whispers troll*

Black_horse, I think that is unfair, I am not advocating not wearing a hat, I am saying people have the right not to wear a hat. I do wear my hat but I won't preach to anyone who doesn't.

I also don't hold the view 'my head, my life' but there you go.

BH has a very valid point here, what about those who care about you.
I worry if something happened to me how my parents would feel for example, your life affects others as BH says, something you should think about

It is your choice, no one is disputing that, but i hate to hear of people getting hurt or worse, people get funny about it for a reason, it could save your life

Kit - didnt say you were a troll

sophos: i think in the light of current posts (A+E one) this is a sensitive issue. i have lost a friend due to the same attitude you uphold, so it is a sensitive issue to me also. i think it is very silly to delibrately not wear safety equipment.

Couldn't agree more.

Myself I couldn't ride without a hat too scared of cracking my head open and getting brain damage! I'm even too scared to jump in my velvet hat as it has a lower safety rating in the enhap results than my ventair. God I'm paranoid... but I think to a certain extent at a my age (16) that can't be a bad thing.

To me it's simple, wear a hat! There are no two ways, you either do and reduce the risk or don't and increase it. I know the family of people who have died from ridng accidents and been in coma's. If you see the affect it has on the family and people around them you'd never not wear a hat again! It really is a serious thing and I do have strong beliefs on it. I used to sit on my old horse down from the field without a hat on and i look back on it and I never would now. Not after the people i've met and the lives it affects.

i have to say sophos i agree with you. i ALWAYS wear my hat but wouldn't preach at another adult if they chose not to- same as i wouldn't tell another adult to do anything! kids are different altogether tho....
(and i have quite literally had my life saved by my hat so i feel qualified to give my opinion!)

i worked on a dressage yard where it was 'uncool' to wear a hat but i still wore one! dont follow the trend,

flat, hat hair vs fractured skull, stitches or worse!

no contest really.

I disagree

For a start why should the rest of us pay for the possible life long care of a selfish idiot who thought that an accident like that could never happen to them?
What about their family, do they deserve to see their loved one brain damaged for ever?
I had a fall of over eight feet with the horse landing on top of me, my hat split open like an eggshell, but all I suffered was concussion.
If I hadn't worn a hat I wouldn't be typing this now.
Even a quiet horse can trip over it's own feet and as it falls strike you in the head with a metal shod hoof.
Yes, people may choose not to wear a hat, but anyone with a brain wears one irritating though they can be, and you will find anyone like me who has suffered a terrible fall won't sit on a horse without one again....

My first point is that if you are over 15 (I think that's the age!) it is not against the law to ride without a hat.

HOWEVER

As already said, 'on your head be it'. My Genie is safe as houses, but as we all know horses can be unpredictable, and I would never ever ride her without a hat. On a lot of dressage yards I know it is very common to ride without a hat, which to me is stupid, but it's their choice and I cannot stop them! I do, however, think the laws on wearing hats should be tightened.

sophos - it is your right to choose what you want to do, not for anyone else to tell you

HOWEVER

it is very selfish to consider undertaking a dangerous activity without appropriate precautions...

Black Horse, Good point about "uncool" hat wearing culture. I have been at a yard in the past where there were posers who liked to ride hatless, and mock hat wearers for being uncool. Very unfair. While its their choice and their heads pressurising others to be so unsafe is definately wrong. This is another debate though. Also get the point about friends and family.

As it happens I always wear my hat, but I cant stand the way this country is going - such a bloody nanny state with no-one allowed the freedom of will even to make basic decisions for themselves.

Really, the only person who has a right to demand a person wears their hat, is their family, those who would be directly impacted by the person not doing so (and in the event of an accident) for everyone else, I do wonder why you would want to stick your nose into a situation where your opinion isn't asked for.

kitsune - i wholeheartedly agree, merely stating my opinion.

the way this country is going, if your horse farted in my direction i could sue for trauma.

I have been know to ride without a hat in certain situations, and take the view that top hats and beagler-type hats are also the equivalent to wearing no hat, but I would wear those in the right circumstances. My choice.
