Sorry, I know you hate these!

How much would you say this pony is worth?

14.1 5yr old gelding
Unknown breeding
Brought over from Ireland having been hacked up and down the lanes a few weeks ago
'Quiet natured'
Done nothing other than that stated above and been walked and trotted in an arena.

I'm interested as a friend of mine is thinking of buying this for her novice daughter and I think they are being robbed. Thanks!

Psst ....read the post on top of the new lounge forum ;) Just giving you heads up :)

Thanks but I'm not selling it - or even buying it - I'm just interested to know what people think its worth. My friend is not horsey at all and i think they are being taken for a ride by the people selling the pony - I just wanted to see what peoples opinion were as to what it is actually worth.

I'd say about 700 pounds max, given the current market, he'd make about 400/500 euro max, the country is awash with them. (I'm from ireland). I have one myself, although he's not for sale!!!

If it is a young small pony of unknown breeding, only been hacked up and down the lane and only had a walk and trot around an arena...I would say no more than 1K in this climate. If he is sweet and quiet natured then maybe the potential people will pay more as the pony is worth what someone is willing to pay for it! Also maybe perhaps not the best buy for a novice?

Plenty of ponies going cheap as chips that have done a hell of a lot more, PC types etc. What is he asking for it?

Gosh that is a bit harsh! Being a regular on the forum hardly makes me an expert!

The pony is for sale at £2700. I've told my friend I think its steep but they have no experience with horses and think because their daughter has become attached to it that it must be a 'special one off' pony. They are also keen to buy it as it will make the buying process easier - it's at the riding school where she has lessons and she could keep it there etc, so no looking at other ponies, no transport and so on.

IMO (which I have told them) she needs something that has done more and this one is way too expensive. They have also been told she could wait until spring to buy it by which time it will be 'much more expensive because it will have done a bit of schooling'.

I just wanted a few other opinions on the price before I go back to her as she has asked me again what I think she should offer.

If its a connamara type - even if it just looks like one, they sell for much more than you'd expect, even when green. However that does sound expensive, they would be able to get a good pony club allrounder that could teach the child a lot for that price. It sounds like they aren't going to listen to you, so I'd just let them get on with it. The pony sounds a safe type, so the child isn't going to get hurt or anything. You've tried to warn them, and they don't want to take your advice, so let them get on with it!

PS. Sometimes those that have posted the most are far from the most experienced! Nothing personal to abyone. I've posted a lot!!

Far too expensive, even if a connie type as it has no papers. Also I would not think that a 5 year old however quiet would be suitable for a first pony, especially with unhorsey parents.

I think a nice schoolmaster pony would be a good first pony, and I'm sure with that budget they could find something suitable.

I do apologise to you both most profusely .... I simply thought that members with such obvious experience would not require the assistance of others..I wish you luck with your purchase..

That has to be one of the oddest comments I've ever read on here, and I've read the Starzaan posts!

As for the pony, I'm afraid your friends are having their pants pulled down! Breed notwithstanding, the pony has done nothing, so is worth very little. And with the amount it has done, I struggle to see how they can be sure that it is suitable for a novice? Not to mention the age... An accident waiting to happen, unfortunately (and one they're paying waaay over the odds for) :(

I paid £950 for B in 2006 when the market was much stronger, he then cost me £200 to ship to the UK - He was rising 4, just over 14h at the time, had been backed 6 weeks and literally just hacked round the fields and roads. I bought him in Ireland from a friend of a friend. He is an unreg golden dun connemara and although a wobbly green baby had a lovely attitude. He would however have no way been suitable for a novice even though he was quite quiet. There is no way I would pay that much for a 4 year old - unless possibly it was a reg connemara - it would have to be very well bred and spot on breed standard though!

He did grow into this though!

Hmm it doesn't sound like it's just me being tight then! I don't think they will listen to me for a moment, but at least if I tell them what I think I know I've tried.

It's not a connemara type - it seems like a sweet pony, but then so are most ponies, especially when they are unfit and hairy!

I got my lad as a 4 year old 14.1hh, form Ireland (he was alread in UK when I went to see him, so his price included the cost of getting him over in the first place). Got him through a dealer, he was bomb proof out hacking, and lightly school (he could walk, trot and canter, could also jump 3'), he cost me £2500. So I think the price they are aking is a little OTT.

I wouldn't pay more than about £750 for a horse like that, nearly £3k is wiiiiiildly optimistic.

I'd get them to look online at some of the websites and show them what they can get for that amount of money.

Far too expensive imo, in the current climate I think even £1000 is steep. But Im sure they will get their asking price, someone always seems to come along and buy.

Thanks everyone :) I wanted to check I wasn't going off on one and being stingy! She'll probably buy it anyway but I'm having a chat with her later to see if I can convince her to at least look at some others.

then your friends are silly :)

they shouldnt pay more than a thousand for that!!!

or they should use their budget to get something decent!!!

LOVE the lovely dun connemara :) reminds me of mine but niiiiicer!!!

no way id pay over £700...

£2700 is rediculous!!! imo!!!

i got a very green but very very genuine mare for £1200 (15.2 potential dressage warmblood x)

I love the dun connemara too - gorgeous!

I've printed off loads of ads for them of really nice ponies which have done a bit of everything, between 6-10 years old, look well behaved etc and I'm struggling to get them to even look :( Friend thinks it's easier to do it this way as the pony is on the yard where they will keep it and as its a RS instructors are there to help (I pointed out they would have to be paid for this!). I knew I shouldn't have got involved - it's really stressing me out!
