My first rant! (And need advice) Long, sorry ...

I'm SOOOOOO p**!!d off and upset, and would value some of your wise advice. The situation is that there was a major row at our livery yard 10 days ago (I was away, but was getting regular updates), and a lot of us have been getting very fed up with the lack of management, poor fencing, people nicking stuff, etc, etc ..... Anyway, one of the liveries had got a group together and they had decided that they wanted to leave. She organised a lunch meeting and we decided to advertise for a yard to rent all together. I found something immediately which seemed to be almost ideal - lovely courtyard, winter and summer grazing, separate tack room and rug drying room, and close to our current yard. The best thing from my point of view, as my mare is going to be foaling at the beginning of May, is that there's a foaling box. So I fixed a time for everyone to view the yard, and the "ringleader" of the group, having wound everyone up to decide to leave, started to pick holes in the place, and obviously had decided that she wasn't up for a move after all. I feel a total prat, having stuck my neck out, only to find that everyone else has changed their minds, and its turned out to be just (another) storm in a teacup. Someone told me today that this woman has been moaning about our livery for 5 years and saying that she is going to leave, but never does!
Question : should I move anyway? (There's only one other person at the new place at the moment, so it might be a bit lonely?) Will it be too disruptive for my mare to move her at this stage of her pregnancy? I'm feeling very let down and would love your thoughts and advice

If you want to move then I would move, ii doesnt sound like you will miss these people too much anyway and if its a nicer yard, then go for it!

If the other place looks/seems nicer then i wud just move the people at the other yard seem like a bunch of nags.... not the horses LOL

, Is the new yard newly established or just lacking customers? maybe you should look into that.....otherwise if everything looks ok then move.
I am glad i have my own place i couldnt be bothered with the nagging/bickering

I would DEFINITELY go for it!! I'd move tomorrow! And i think it will be fine for your mare as long as you take it steady.

You were going to move your mare anyway, if everyone else hadnt backed out, so i'd move if you think in the long run it will be a much nicer yard!

If the yards facilities are going to suit you better move. I learnt a long time ago that you need to do what is right for you, as when it comes to the crunch that is exactly what everyone else will do.

move! it doesnt sound too good the yard you are on and if your not happy its likely your horse wont be either. can i just mention that me and my dad run a small private yard with many happy customers but it is impossible to keep everyone happy, just would like to say not all yard owners are annoying and selfish!!

I would move. I hate people like them who lack backbone, they will probably continue to moan for years whilst you will have done something positive about it. Sounds like this woman is a pain and the rest of them are just sheep. Godd luck to you!!

It sounds like it just needs one of you to take the plunge. Your mare will be fine, & better she is moved now then later. If you are happy with the yard then I bet it wont be long before you have company.

Did you advertise in Wealden ad?? I would move too - you've got to be somewhere you are happy for te sake of you and your horse.

With all the livery yard gripes we seem to have maybe us liveries should form some sort of a union!!

Thanks so much everyone! You have helped me sort my head out, and yes, I've decided to move!

Everything about the new place seems lovely - its the old stud farm of Plumpton College - and the people from the college who manage it couldn't be more helpful ... The only glitch is that it may feel a bit lonely at first, as there will only be me and one other livery. But I'm sure that it will fill up over the next few weeks, and hopefully the new people will be nice! And like you FMM, it wouldn't surprise me one little bit if some of the others don't make their way over eventually! Big hugs to everyone - a positive end to my first rant!!

Personally I would not be able to stand all of the upset these people are causing. Horses pick up on bad vibes and get unsettled and as you say your mare is due to foal, a quieter, enviorment would perhaps be better suited to her.

For your mares sake, I think you should move anyway. I think it would be nice for her to have some peace, and when the foal is born, do you really want a whole yard full of people clambering round her and not letting them rest.

You would not be able to stop people going and looking at your mare and foal and personally I would hate this, so a new yard would be better for her and you. Once there you can get yourselves together and hopefully meet some really nice new people. I would not want the others to come with me, as similar problems with them might occur.

A fresh start for you both, while you have this opportunity would be a very good thing.

Very true - we did this. Left a livery yard with lots of facilities for a smaller (much smaller) private yard as we had a mare in foal.

There were so many kids running around having fights and screaming matches etc.. and one of them's parents remarked how nice it would be for the kids to see a foal on the place and my sister nearly passed out in terror! It was all very well the YO assuring us she's make sure the foal wasn't distrubed, but she didn't have eyes in the back of her head and she couldn't really keep them away.

So we moved.

It was the right decision, the old yard expanded not long after and there is now not far off 100 horses there - plus owners and kids - totally not the place for a foal!

Praps we had better form the Clique of Disillusioned Liveries, MoodyMare! I'll keep you all posted on how the move goes (planned now for 3rd March), and I really ought to post some piccies of Beth with her big fat belly - I've enjoyed the diary of Hannah in foal so much!
