HELP PLEASE SOMONE!! I'm 25 and have been learing to ride for just over 2 years and live in West Sussex.

I have never hunted beforebut am desperateto get into it and actually (sadly!) don't as of yet own my own horse either (but will be taking up a share shortly).
I thought it would be a good idea to go along to a meet on foot (even though I know I will be insanly jealous of those on horse back! :O ) just to get a feel of the atmosphere and see what its all about and get to know some like minded people.

The problem is that none of my freinds have anything to do with horses (Moast are afraid of them!) or like hunting and so definitely would not want to go with me...
Whenever i try to talk about my lessons or hack i've been out on they all switch off and don't want to know and even the few who try to look interested don't really understand what the terminology im using means.

I want to go so much to get to know more people in the hunting community but to be completely honest I would feel terribly embarrassed just showing up on my own and hanging about like a spare wheel... :(

What can I do?..

if people aren't horsey there's no reason for them to be interested. why not just wait till you have your share and see if someone on the yard / his owner want to go to a meet?

Just do it. At the meet you will pribs find another spare wheel and there you go a hunt buddy and after going a few times you may find some new friends on horse back and you can natter on about horsey stuff without boring people who arent horsey

Why don't you join a riding club and help out until you get your share, and you will probably meet some people who are willing to go with you to the meet.

Why not pop a new thread on here entitled: 'Any people who hunt with xxxx hunt' and obviously insert the name of your local hunt. Explain your situation and ask if there is anyone who wouldn't mind you tagging along/meeting them there.

Yes I think JFTD is right. You can't expect your friends to become interested just because you are, but the more time you spend around horses the more new friends you'll find.

It's wonderful you're getting a share. I'd concentrate on that situation and other opportunities, such as going hunting, will follow later.

Some hunts have a hunt supporters group so you could spend some time on the internet finding hunts in your area & if they have a supporters group - hunts always need to raise funds to keep going-then join the supporters group you'll definately be welcome & find a variety of friendly people. Or eben just go to their fund raising events, wouldn't your friends enjoy a hunt ball?

Even if you just turn up as a follower I can guarantee that someone will talk to you! I know our hunt are really friendly, and we love it when new people come out to show their support. You could contact the secretary of the hunt you intend to follow and let them know your situation, and they may put you in touch with other people who follow regularly, so you have already spoken to someone beforehand. Come along, we don't bite! (At least, our lot don't!) X

Get in touch with your local hunt, you will find they are usually a friendly bunch and tell them what you want to do, they may know of a yard that hires out horses or you could try the supporters club. But I can say now that you will make some new friends on your wave length.:D:D:D:D:D:D

Thank you so much for your quick replys! Your right I shouldnt expect my friends to be interested in something they have nothing to do with (I for instance wouldnt find discussing golf very interesting!).

I don't feel quite so daunted now!. I'll look up the supporters groups and see if i can get involved that way. Can't wait to start my share and get on horse back with a pack! :D:D

Find out the local hunt to you and give them a call. Ask for the name of either the hunt supporters secretary or just explain that you are new to riding but want to hunt and to do so feel you would like to know more about it before you go out mounted. Chances are that they will give you the name of an ardent foot follower and ask if you can go with them in their vehicle.
Many foot followers are extremely knowledgeable about what is going on and are only to pleased to tell you what is going on.

Bella pm me where you are, I'm surrey, w Sussex border and on foot at present. Would be quite happy to go with you and introduce you to some surrey union hunt people if that would help?
