I have been with the NFU for ten years now, and just received the renewal notice which has nearly doubled the reason being that my girl is now 17 !! I am in shock and really do not know what to do. They say they can do a Veteran Policy, but the vets fees go down to three thousand and Ebonys value goes to five hundred, plus she will not be covered for illness and desease. This brings it down to less than what I am paying at the moment, or I can keep the standard policy with a drop in vet fees and her value as with the veteran for about fourteen pounds extra a month. I just do not know what to do for the best, since I had my accident I am not able to work so things are a bit tight but I always go with out so she get everything she needs.

What would you do any advise or thoughts would be great to hear, thanking you in advance.

This sort of insurance post has been done before but yes, NFU have increased virtually every equine policy. I had my mare insured with the NFU for several years and this year the premium doubled ( but I did have a big claim for a KS op) so I went with KBIS who were very competetive and are now paying out for lameness :-( However my daughters horse is still insured with NFU as they were actually more competitve premium wise than any other plus I have my trailer on that policy. So shop around, I'm sure you will find a more competitve policy somewhere.

Shop around. Petplan do a veteran policy that will cover illness to 25years. KBIS I think may also do a veteran policy to a higher age limit. Your other option is to go through a broker - Julie Andrews specialises in horse insurance. You could also try insuremyhorse or towergate lloyd and whyte

I think the problem with NFU is they gave big discounts last year for their centenary year, will have lost loads in snow damage claims last year and now need to try recoup!

KBIS do a very limited policy for over 15s.:( I really think that these veteran policies should be for over 20s. 15 is not old nowadays and horses work just as well at 15 as they do at 10.

That is true but unfortunately due to the cost of horse claims, there is no incentive for insurance companies to extend the age limits. Petplan have done, so have some others but you pay for the privilege!

Unfortunately the costs for vets investigations etc have to be picked up somewhere and a £400 annual horse premium doesn't go far to cover a £5,000 + vets bill!

My NFU premium went up, but not by as much as I was expecting after reading on here!!

My premium went up loads as few years ago when my old boy (who has since died) was 17. It is a tough decision. I was going to reduce the cover to the veteran policy, then a few months before the renewal he became ill so I kept it! (glad I did because the bill was huge and in the end he died)

It's interesting how everyone's renewals have been. Insurance is so complicated (I got a lecture off my accountant husband about "risk" and how they work out premiums!! lol!). KBIS were only slightly cheaper than NFU for me and they wanted her vetted!!! So no point. SEIB and Petplan were HUGELY more!

I was with the NFU for years aswell... no claims & they decided to increase my premiums by 50%. I have now moved to SEIB who gave me a great quote. you also get a discount if you are BD affiliated... they also do full cover for horses up to 25years although they may require vets reprts to confirm fitness. Very happy with that as our 20 year old is competing at adv med & is fighting fit :)

I was in the same boat - NFU doubled after 5 years with them and no claims!

I am now with SEIB and my boy is 18. They were great and he is 'fully comp' :o All they asked for was a print out of his vet history and a copy of my renewal :)

Excellent customer service from SEIB - just disappointed with NFU :(

I have horse and dog insured with the NFU both doubled when renewed. I've had a claim for my dog but not my horse. They tried to increase my car insurance by over £300. Been with them for 9 years but I didn't renew my car with them as I've got full no claims and was not prepared to pay it.

Has anybody stayed with NFU, approached them, and been successful in convincing them to decrease the premium? xx

Yes I stayed because only KBIS was fractionally cheaper (like £20) and they wanted her vetted (£250!)

My OH rang and they won't decrease. We worked out my premium had only gone up about £80 if you took into account we had a double mutual bonus last year and this year it's only a single bonus (my friends premium actually went down last year).

My renewal came through the other day and has gone up by £300! the £657! we have cancelled it. what made me laugh was their list of reasons, one being the weather last year.....

Yikes! That is the thing, I have two horses, and a trailer with them. It becomes difficult in that Sammi is 18, so like you, I would be asked for a vetting if I were to move his insurance to another company.

I think I will have a bash having a word with them, but in all honesty, I cannot justify shelling out for such high premiums just for insurance. I may have to consider insuring Rox (3 year old) and my trailer elsewhere, leaving Sammi where he is. xx

This is the trouble I have a couple that I have tried want a vetting before they will take us on because of her age, last year I did get a bonus but did not expect to pay for it this year bloody cheek !!

my car policy renewal came through today - was 74 a month and has gone up to 124. I think we shall be having a conversation tomorrow, especially as the car is worth about 3 grand tops.

My car policy with them was £500-odd, went upto £900+ !!!! Swiftly moved elsewhere. I've never had a claim with them so this was totally unjustified.

I had a 52% increase proposed by NFU earlier in the year after no claims and no changes to my policy. Rang my local office, their HQ and various other bits of NFU to try and find out why but they wouldn't explain or have any discussion as to why there was such an increase or offer any reduction. I moved to KBIS, saved about £100 on the premium. I felt sad actually as moved to NFU originally as they had such a good reputation for equine insurance and paying out swiftly on claims etc so I hope all the other companies that we're all now moving to step up to the mark and are as good!

My girl is 6 and they wanted a vetting!!! (only insured for £3500) really not worth it.
