hi peeps... i have a 15.3 mare that is a very good doer....she only has to look at the grass or food and puts on weight. she is currently fed a level round scoop of dengie good doer chaff, a double handful of baileys everyday cubes, garlic and pink powder. my problem is....she runs out of energy about half way through an hours lesson or schooling session

so i need your help in finding a feed that will give her more energy, but without her gaining weight...she is ridden approx 5/6 days every week for between 45 mins to 1 1/2 hrs schooling or hacking...so lets see if you can solve my problem for me...x

i would swap the cubes for allen and page power&performance i find this great for my horse. does not fizz her up but gives her energy as and when she needs it.

I feed mine unmolassed beet with alfalfa pellets for slow release energy and add soaked whole oats for quick release energy as and when its needed, the beauty of the oats is that you can adjust the quantity depending on what level of work you're doing and the effect they're having.

haha, I posted this same post last night!!!!
I got a reply back from saracen feeds today and they said that their shape up would suit or alternatively I could feed small amounts of a high energy feed, such as their speed mix and top up with vitamin supplement to ensure correct levels of minerals/vitamins etc.

Today (before getting the email from saracen) I went and bought a bag of dodson and horrell competition mix (they didn't sell saracen), I'm only going to feed a small amount so will see how my mare goes!!

Mine is very laid back, does not fizz up (except if out in a field with more than 2 other horses that want to race! And even then she's quite happy to just keep up!!), she's also fit and ridden regularly!

taz is a good doer and he gets fed a round scoop of braised oats between each feed, a scoop of hi fi lite and half a scoop of speedi beet in each feed and he has enough energy at the moment for getting him skinny again but it will soon be going up for competiting, i had him on competition mix but felt i had to feed a full scoop a feed to get a reaction and it wasnt worth the money when i can get a bag of oats for £4

I would stop the pink powder and just give her a general vitamin supplement like Equivite as pink powder is quite conditioning. I have a good doer and he gets a scoop of Hifi Good Doer, 1/3 scoop of high fibre nuts (only in winter) and 1/4 scoop of oats, as well as a vitamin supplement, once a day. He can be quite fizzy sometimes but used to lack energy when schooling, the oats have really helped there, with no extra unnecessary sharpness.

I just picked up some Propell Plus to try adding to Welsh Cob's feed, we will see if its the rocket fuel that may kill us as some people have found

not that anyone has actually died...that I'm aware of!!
