Hi Guys...

I'm relitively new, but some of you may have seen me around asking advice about a Shetland pony I rescued in Feb (Timmy).

Well, my mostly non-horsy friends and family are sick to death of my horsey chatter/worry about timmy, so REALLY don't want to her me jabber on about my new mare all the time. They give me 'the look'. I know you know which one I mean. The one that non-horsy people give horsy people when they talk about horses.

BUT I'M JUST SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!

So, without further adieu, Here is Ruby:

I really, REALLY hope that's worked as I'm not sure how to put pics in threads.

She's 3 next tuesday, and is standing a smidge under 15hh. She's only halter broken, but is the friendlyest horse I have EVER met. She's been brought up so well.. she absolutely loves people, and is so inquisitive. She follows me around like a little lost puppy already, and i've only had her since Monday.

These pics were taken when I first got her on monday, so before I gave her a good brush. But now she's all shiny :)

She's getting on with Timmy well, and he LOVES her. She gets a little jealous when I fuss him, but it's to be expected really, and she's fine in the stable with him.

Anyway, I'd better dash as I'm at work and my free lesson is over. But i'll be on later to give you more details etc :)

Awww congratulations on your new arrival :D She looks lovely and I hope you have tons of fun with her :D And Timmy is too cute for words

She's lovely. My kind of hairy and chunky :)

And boy do I know "the look" you are talking about...... I'm the only "black-sheep" horse-owner in the family so I have to put up with some stick! I don't care though... I rise about it and talk horse anyway! :D My three children are all grown up and betrayed me completely by not being interested in the slightest!! *sigh* Thankfully, over the years I've converted my husband so he doesn't mind a jot and often instigates a conversation himself anyway.....

Aww she looks lovely! :)

OP I do hope you have her insured for vet's fees as I note from your thread regarding your rescue shettie that you were having to sell saddles and handbags in order to fund for xrays etc. It is well worth insuring them! :)

Aww lovely new mare :-) I know the look so well! I ramble on and on at the best of times, when I get onto the topic of horses with my friends, family and especially poor OH, I see their eyes glaze over! Oh well they all have their own topics to bore me with!xx

Thanks so much guys - especially for the pics :)

I've just realised that my daughter still has a black eye in the last pic lol.. a result of running around the room with a quilt on her head and falling. I get so many funny looks; especially since Timmy headbutted her on tuesday and bust her lip too. But honestly, she IS looked after lol!

As for the insurance - it was the first thing I did! Lol.. Timmy is insured too, but because of the state he was in when I rescued him, it's only for accident, personal injury and public liability. Hence being stuck with the vets fees... They're around £800 to date. Ruby has full vets fees and a low excess - there's no way i'm getting in that situation again. Still, I guess that now I can get Ruby checked out / vaccinated etc at the same time as Timmy has his check ups and blood work done, and save some call out fees. Every cloud...

Timmy's doing great with his muzzle now. Ever since I got the Dinky one, he seems happy about wearing it, and it doesn't rub (probably cos the grass pokes through the side more!). I am worried about the weight he is putting on though.. I'm going to have to watch him with Ruby's food as they have been sharing a stable.

Well, I took Ruby for a walk today. Just a little one, (in her headcollar) to try and get an idea of her temperament while she is out, and see how she reacted to 'spooky' things. She got really giddy with it being her first walk out - not helped by walking past fields with new horses in them who began running around. She was very forward going and strong, but overall I was really impressed with how brave she is. She walked through really, really deep puddles without a thought, and past grates etc with just having a little look. I must say though, I think i'm going to work on voice commands in the paddock more, and possibly mouthe her up before I take her out again. With her size and excitement, I don't think i would have had enough control to take her on roads etc (we just went down a bridleway near our paddock).

So, although I was pulled through puddles, and my arms feel like they're hanging on by a thread, I classed it as a success. :D

Tomorrow, I'm going to work in the paddock with voice commands - leading etc. I might even introduce her to the lunging equipment :D

what are you going to do with ruby? back her in time and keep her? or just see how things go. Do you think you will be able to take tim for walks out now his feet are improving? :)

I'm going to take it steady and hopefully keep her for a very long time :D She gets on lovely with Timmy, and he's with us for life, so fingers crossed she will be too :) She's a handful, but she's so young and inexperienced. I'm really confident that she'll make an amazing allrounder, and will be a perfect family horse in time :) My eldest daughter is having lessons, so in a few years hopefully she'll be good for us to share. The only problem is going to be stopping her from wanting to ride her until she and ruby are both experienced enough! Unfortunately, at 6 1/2 years old, my daughter now thinks she could handle anything, and has NO fear. So as soon as Ruby is backed, she'll be wanting to take her out on her own. I'll have lots of tears before she's a competent teenager able of handling her!

As for Timmy, I don't want to risk taking him for a walk just yet because of the extensive damage to his feet.. I'm not sure that I'll risk it unless I can get him completely off the bute to be honest. His paddock is plenty big enough, and we give him lots of fuss and cuddles (even though he's pretty grumpy and doesn't actually want them most of the time). The roaming around seems to be freeing his joints up. Although today he started galloping around the field when I took Ruby for her walk, so I'll have to keep an eye on him tomorrow incase he's overdone it.

My daughter calls Ruby 'Snow White' because she is young and beautiful. Timmy is 'Grumpy'; one of the seven dwarfs - on account of him being an old, small man. It suits him :D
