So i only bought my skull cap to go on a specific ride a few years ago, so i do have another navy show type one but i cant find it. I was lucky to get a kids CO one (why is the exact same size in adult twice the price? wth?) but its fairly abused. Never had an actual fall thankfully and lets not go down the route of jinxing that one but it has fell off the approx 4ft high wall a few times. Put it up on a peg about 6ft the other day and came back to it on the floor right on the top point so im sure ill have to replace it. Also it absolutely stinks to the point i have to wash my hair after i ride because i can smell myself

I just hate the thought of buying a new one when the one i have doesn't look broken.

Alas!!!!

Anyone seen any good deals on helmets? Not going to spend a months wadge on one, but interested in one that the inside can come out so i can avoid this current stinky issue.

Im afraid so. You only have one head , it's not worth taking the risk.
Falling fro 6ft onto a hard surface I'd be shocked if it wasn't damaged.

It's a pita but better safe than sorry. I just bought a uvex with mips. £117 uvex exxential with mips and £82 for uvex exxential without mips. Not a deal but they are a nice helmet. Final adjustable at the back of head and the height of the helmet. Lots of vents and removable liner

I went to my local saddlery and was fitted for a hat. I was looking for a basic skull and ended up with a Charles Owen one with a cartoon lining (children’s = no VAT). I think it’s EN1384 but not PAS0015.

You do need to change it for sure. I wouldn't buy a hat online as I like to try a few but if you get one with a removable washable lining at least you can keep it sweet smelling until you drop it again and need to replace it again.....

I needed a new hat when all the lockdown stuff started so ended up buying a CO pro2 plus which has a removable liner. It's a very thin strip and I found it bunched up and I kept getting a numb forehead! All liners are not equal. I now have a Gatehouse air rider MK2 with a removable liner and it's fab. And cheaper. It's like the Uvex in that it's got a dial at the back. £100 and looks like you can get them for less. They do have a peak tho so no good for XC. I love having a washable liner.

I haven't damaged my hat but it's been around a while so could probably do with replacing. It's my birthday on Sunday so this thread has convinced me to get myself a Uvex Exxential - thanks for the enabling :D

New years resolution...don't hang hat on headcollar peg!!!

I spent a lot of time telling my kids not to put their bike/skateboard/riding helmets upside down on tables or to hang them on small pegs because they always roll or unhook themselves and fall.

My daughter was horrified at the idea of putting her riding helmet on the ground, but would then go kissing ponies' noises and get slobbered on.

A helmet on the ground can't fall any lower.

Would you dissect your old hat and see if it was compromised - I always mean to do that …. But then forget.
If you do would you report back on here!!
I've done this for a head after being bucked off onto concrete and ending up with a mild concussion, there was a definite area where the foam was squashed.

Not sure that’s wise cause I don’t have helmets for my fingers ?

I gave it a bit of a push though and I thought it was moving a little which it Probably shouldn’t. The uvex ones are growing on me ? I might end up in the tack shop tomorrow cause I do need pellets…..

I change mine every 2 years after having tack shop and seeing how hats changed over their life span. Your hat will stretch with wear and sweat. The lining also starts to wear away. Plus the hygiene side of it.
