I barely ever feed my 4 yr old treats, he can have them in his feed bowl but never by hand as he is a nibbler and doesn't get the hint when the treats run out!

anyway, I arrived at the yard yesterday morning and santa had been for all the horses, the yard manager left stockings for each horse, containing carrots, an apple, a parsnip and a bit of swede.

I gave him the carrots in his hay net but when I tried to hand feed them the apple he literally couldn't workout how to eat it! he ended up with it all in his mouth and when I managed to get it out and break it up for him!

does anyone else have a horse that struggles?

2 summers ago we took Jay XC schooling. It was quite a long journey, and a hot day. When we finished he was washed off, had a walk and a drink and then was loaded while I had a picnic. We had packed some fruit salads from Sainsburys, and I was so pleased with Jay I saved him the apple.

I fed the pieces to Jay, he was disgusted. I had not reckoned that the fruit salad was drenched in Orange juice, and although I had drained it the taste remained. He refused the apple pieces, and then went on to refuse apples of any description for about 3 months!

As far as your horse is concerned I would chop some and add to his feed, I am sure he will soon catch on.

awww poor Jay having orange flavoured apple bits.

I do usually cut his apple up into about 8 bits! He had great fun bobbing for apples yesterday but just couldn't negotiate a whole apple! I wondered if he's adult teeth were not bit enough yet!!!

Pie struggles with them too. I hate it when he grabs the whole thing and rolls it around in his mouth trying to bite it - I have visions of him trying to swallow it whole so I always cut them up or bash them with something.
