Well, what a relief, I've just spoken to the vet at Liphook who did Misfit's operation today.
Brief history - Misfit came in from the field several weeks ago which a tiny, and I do mean tiny, puncture wound just above his fetlock. We called the vet as it was obviously deep though not scary looking. He had to go into hospital as it was down to the bone, and after two ops to removed chips etc it was discovered that he had a sequestrum forming. So we left him until it was the right time to operate (several more weeks on box rest). During this time his frequent xrays were sent up to Liphook for consultation, and in he went on Monday.
Vet has said that the op went well, Misfit is now up with a cast on his leg to help the leg's strength as a good amount of dead bone (the sequestrum) has now been removed. Below the sequestrum (which was like granulated grey cottage cheese
) he had a large absess at the bottom of his canon bone. The vet said he felt Misfit had been really lucky at the time of the accident not to have broken his leg.
Prognosis is good - he will have an odd shaped leg to a certain extent when the wound site was, but he should return to 100% fitness after yet more box rest. Yippee!
Its been a day of holding my breath, I am so relieved. God I love this horse so much (and he's not even mine really!)
