My 5 year old mare had an operation yesterday to remove her left eye. She didnt get up at all yesterday and the vets were getting a little concerned. She still hasnt got up today even after 3 attempts to hoist her and rock her. Aparently the longer she stays down the less chance of survival. the strange thing is shes eating and drinking well, she just doesnt want to move. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Maybe it is the shock of losing her eye? Is she at the vets still, can they not get a block and tackle on her and hoist her her?

Loads of vibes for you.

yeah shes still at the vets, its so upsetting to see her like that. she seems to get so exhausted. i asked the vets what could be causing her to be like that and they have no idea. im just so worried that they will give up and tell me that she will have to be put down

Have no advice on this one i'm afraid, but am keeping fingers crossed for you and hope she improves soon, maybe it is shock as DD said.

Fingers crossed for you both, being as thought she is still at the vets that they'll get her up one way or another.
My mare was down with botchulism posioning and was very very reluctant for days to get up, they had to tuer her every so often to prevent pressure sores, so do make sure that they do this.I'm sure that it could be down to her losing an eye and maybe be an adjustment process for her.
Are they happy that she is well in other ways, no infections or temperature?
If she is eating and drinking I presume she is also pooing and weeing again all good signs.
When I think about it my mare was down for a couple of weeks wasnt eating or drinking and had to go on a drip, and she made a full recovery albeit we couldn't show her anymore as she lost a lot of pigment in her skin/fur and so went from a lovely bay to a bay with grey patches.

Try and remain positive and push the vets as to the next step, if needs be get a second opinion.

yeah shes pooing and weeing fine and its a healthy colour. her tempreture and pulse are fine too. they keeping rolling her onto each side aswell. they are happy with her thats shes eating, pooing and weeing, its just the not getting up they find strange. thank you for your kind replies. i'll keep you updated to what happens.x

I do hope your mare gets better.I know how you are feeling my boy had a op last wednesday. If she is eating and looking forward to her food have you thought about placing it out of reach so she has to try and get up to reach it,this might just be the encouragement she needs.Thinking of you and wishing both of you all the best.

possibly a myopathy?? damage to the muscle from the pressure of her weight on it whilst under the GA. does normally improve within a few days but she needs to be hoisted up and kept in the sling for as long as possible or the problem will just get worse.
