I returned to the yard this afternoon to turn out horses which had come in for the day. When I got to the yard gate at the top of the drive I saw my 5 year old standing in the middle of the yard (when I had left him in the stable) looking very pleased with his little self.
On inspecting his stable I realised that it was more than likely that I hadn't put his kick bolt on properly (tends to stick a bit) so he had just undone his top bolt and gone for a wander and although this was fairly clever of him - I know it is not an uncommon trick for some horses, so I didn't really think anything of it. This was until I went to turn out the other horses and realised that he had gone round and undone all the top bolts on the stables which had horses in. He was clearly planning a bit escape party but luckily couldn't work out the kick bolt.
It was just really funny that he had only undone the bolts on the 4 stables (out of 8) which had horses in.

He is definitely a major character he does something amusing most days (amusing but generally very time consuming and if your in hurry very annoying) but I love him to pieces for it.

Ive added a few pics of him not really relevant to story but I know I like to see piccys.

Thanks all. I really couldn't believe it - I will definitely be in trouble if he ever learns kick bolts. Made extra sure his door was shut properly today though as I really could do with out him planning another great escape!

LOL! Sounds like that scene out of Black Beauty! Nevermind, I've just had a called saying my little'un (Shetland X) has just escaped out of her field into the neighbours. Gotta get over there at lunchtime

Haha yes it does lol! maybe there would be a movie role in it for him if if I rename him Merry Legs and paint him white (and find a way to shrink him a bit)!

Sounds like you have got another escapologist on your hand there too!

Technically it shouldn't be too difficult for a horse to learn how to undo a kick-bolt, once they learn the technique it shouldn't be any harder than learning to undo a bolt - so watch out! Seriously though, there used to be a houdini on our yard and used a clip to hold the top bolt shut (like the ones on the end of lead ropes).

The little lady will have a severe talking to when I see her later!
