My horse was kicked by another out in the field today. It has left a large fist sized open wound on her upper leg.

I have been advised that sudocrem should do the job. Do people think so or do you advise something else?

Apologies for the big size

Firtsly I would disinfect some scissors and trim the hair away from the cut.

next make sure there are no puncture wounds and he is up to date with tetanus. Clean area thoroughly with hibi scrub. If it is surface I would put some dermasol or other antiseptic creme on and maybe keep in in today . Repeat the cleaning tonight and re evaluate it tomorrow. If not to lame or not sore I would clean again and turnout . Clean like this a few days , then when healing it should clear up fine.

It doesnt look like a vet job to me.

^ theres nothing to stitch?!

its taken the hair off, I would wash with disinfectant (or iodine it) and put an aqueous barrier cream on. Chuck out in the field and "forget" about it if it was mine.

It looks like it hasn't actually broken the skin (but I agree with the poster above I'd trim off the longer hair at the top just to check there isn't anything deeper).
I was always told if you want the wound to stay moist (to let it drain) then creams/ green oils are good. For this one where there is nothing to drain (as it's not broken the skin) maybe just some purple spray (which will dry it up)
Cream might be difficult to get to stay on at that angle/ size of scratch.

In my opinion (for what its worth) I don't think you need the vet, and it doesn't look like it can be stitched as the wound is too large and the part of the leg moves to much to make stitches worthwhile. Its more like a large graze and I would have thought that a topical application of dermagel or sudocream would be the best thing. Just keep an eye on it.

You are lucky insomuch that the wound is not over a joint/ligament/bone. Instead it is muscle mass which has a very good access to blood supply and will therefore heal quickly.

I wouldn't say that needs a vet. Mine has the exact same wound after getting stuck on a small gate, ( went over it rather than round it.. ) he just took the hair off and left a rather sore looking patch. I slathered in sudocrem and it dried out nicely and is now looking fine with some hair poking through :-) if we called the vet for every minor cut or ailment they wouldn't have time for anything else, and the bank may have more claims for bankruptcy ;-)

Looks far worse than it is. Save your money no need for antibis and definitely not stitching. Wash thoroughly with warm water and put on a slightly disinfecting barrier cream and just watch it over the next few days. In fact small punctures are much more dangerous than ones such as these since they close before you notice them and can go septic very quickly. Worst case the hair won't grow back perfectly.
