Was mucking out this morning and i always check poo, just incase!! And found some wee (very wee) pink worms on the top of my mares poo. Picked through it with the fork but they were only on top of two recent poos. I have never had a problem with worms before so am a bit bemused!! We moved yards last sun and her poo started to become quite green and sloppy the past 4-5days but we put it down to the change of haylage as its quite green. Horse beside her also had sloopy poo but got wormed yesterday and he seems better today, friends horses poo has become sloppy the past few days aswell. This is the first iv seen the worms as as i say i do check everyday!! Should i get vet out or worm again myself?

Thanks

Are you on a reg worming rota with the yard or yourself? Yard would be far better. Sounds like small red worms and tbh I would paramox to get the encysted ones was well or panacur 5 day guard. When was she last wormed and with what? A lot off horses have grass poo at the mo as the spring grass is here

I usually do it myself but the old yard had the vet out to worm/vacc at the end of jan so i just said to do her to so dont know what with!! Do you think they were there before we moved her or from moving? New yard just worm whenever but fields never poo picked so doesnt help matters!!

I'm only guessing here but I'd say they were prob there before you moved, if encysted and a wormer used that didn't cover encysted they could off all come out the stomach wall now and have large numbers. Ideally you need all the horses in the field wormed together and on the same wormer/ fields rested/poo picked etc and grazed with sheep if poss. But i would get yours wormed asap with a wormer to cover encysted as well. Also try and find out the worming history off the others in your field? Maybe their owners would be happy to join you to make sure you do them all together and get a worming plan wrote up. Also think about a worm count

Whats the difference between the panacur and pramox? For the panacur 5 day course is it 1 bottle of 225ml each day? Is the pramox on a 5 day dose aswell?

Panacur - a bottle should last the (average) horse for the 5 doses - done on bodyweight as all wormers.

Pramox - single dose.

If they are still there/you can find more than some worm count providers offer a 'what is this?' service. You send them a sample of what you found and they will identify them for you. This will help you to decide what wormer to use in order to correctly treat the specific issue you have found.
(Just as an aside, if your mare has encysted worms, or tapeworms, these will not show up on a standard worm count BUT this test is designed to identify the actual creatures you have found on your horses droppings rather than a regular worm count)

Here is a link to one of the labs that offer this service:
