hi all,

my horse hates me putting hoof oil on, as soon as i touch her hoof with the brush she stamps and paws then she will move about so i cant get in on her! iv tried telling her off, giving her a tap on the shoulder, stroking her leg and speaking to her to reassure her but nothing works...any ideas??

My farrier would say - stop putting it on! ;) - He thinks that 90% of the time its more a waste of money than actually needed - I dont bother tbh - (however mine isnt a delicate TB!) :D

does she do the same if you crouch down and do nothing, just stay down there? - I'm thinking along the lines of it just being a sort of nervousness about you being down there?

I forsee lots of bending down and back breaking practice here! :) Good luck

Well.. my horse doesnt like his fetlocks being trimmed (yes his slightly weird) and wont allow you to touch his legs if you attempt to do this. So I have to trick him, pretend to be picking out his hooves and trim his fetlocks then. Have you tried this method before?

Perhaps she doesn't like the smell of it? perhaps try a different brand or use a hoof grease instead and just rub it on with cloth once you've picked her feet out.

Get one person to hold one front leg up while you oil the others....if you must oil them that is.

Practice with the brush without dipping it in the oil, bob the brush on the end of a long stick or broom handle and just keep pretending to oil her feet if she moves, follow, she can't get that far if she's tied up she might realise it's a hell of a lot easier just to stand still and be patient.

My mare is exactly the same  I tried desensitizing and all the tricks in the book, three years down the line ive taken it as its not such a big deal and pick her feet up as if picking out and do it upside down :o

You could try using a dry sponge and start rubbing horses leg get it uste to you not just putting oil on then maybe put some hoof oil on the sponge and try with a sponge until she/he gets uste to it

So pleased it's not just me that has resorted to doing this ^^. My mare is determined that a small brush on her hoof is going to kill her. Fine about everything else just has a paintbrush phobia! :p

haha thanks guys!

she doesnt mond me kneeling beside her etc as one poster suggested, its literally asd soon as i touch hr hoof with the brush- even if i use a brush to get mud from her hooves she just hates it! ...........i too have been lifting her feet to oil them ( as if picking them out) its a bit tricky and messy but looks like it may be the only way! x

why bother at all.

My farrier also thinks it is a waiste of time unless it is for appearance before a show.
It drys the hoof out preventing moisture getting in!

Use a sponge and baby oil, has the same cosmetic effect.:)

I have yet to speak to a farrier who thinks hoof oil does any good at all.

Whoops, note to self, read (as in reed, not red, flipping English language) thread before posting, someone else already suggested the sponge.
