I have just sold my chestnut mare but I have noticed that in places where she is looseing her winter coat she is going bald. She has got a really thin coat but her summer coat mainly around her wither is just not coming through. I have washed her in Hibi scrub. Has anyone got anymore idea's?

It's been a GREAT winter for lice this year! Our yard has just got over an outbreak and about 10 horses had to be treated. One livery was told by her vet that ALL vets in the area had sold out of Frontline (best treatment for lice). Is your girl itchy too? You can just about see lice {{shudder}} on the horse's coat - made easier if you lean on your ned for a few minutes then move away and the lice will all have come to the additional heat {{shudders again}}. Check your arm! They look like teeny bot eggs creeping slowly around your ned {{shudders again}}.

if you are using lots of supplements then they can affect each other and change the coat coming through. happened to my riding instructors horse as he had all sorts to try and help azoturia

my old tb done this after i rescued her she shed on her face and lost all her coat around her shoulders legs chest face ect: the vet said it was either the fact she was now getting food and it being good rich food or just that some horses loose all their coat when too keen to shed, it was recommended that she was washed once a wk in lice shampoo (even though lice was ruled out) then once a wk in medicated shampoo but NO hibi scrub as this would be too strong!! hope this helps
