hi everyone,
my horse is being scoped tomorrow for ulcers, i am just wondering if he does have ulcers how effective the gastro guard is, has anyone else had any experiences with this.

Cant help with how effective Gastroguard is but my boy was scoped for ulcers before his double stifle arthroscopy (sp?). Ulcers found and now on syringe gastro guard. Will be interested to see peoples thoughts on this.
 
Gastrogard is very effective, since it actually stops acid production in the stomach giving it time to heal. However, depending on the horse, it may be hard to keep them from coming back.

In my experience, GG is not enough to keep the horse healthy. You should consider a low starch/sugar diet and supplementing with alfalfa (calcium oxalate raises the pH of the stomach helping it to heal as well). A continuous supply of hay is also essential.
 
GG helps get rid of them but you do need to manage them right, as above low sugar starch diet, means no molasses, and lots of forage.
 
As others have said, GG is incredibly effective, and i saw a difference in my boy within 48 hours. However, also as others have said, the entire management of the horse should be changed to suit a horse susceptible to ulcers.

As much turn-out as possible (mine lives out 24-7), limited/managed 'stress' (we believe the trigger for my horse was the total change of environment when i bought him), access to forage 24/7, low starch, low sugar high fibre feeds.

Feed wise, my boy has

1 stubbs scoop Dengie Alfa-A Oil (or Healthy Tummy if thats in stock)
1scoop (about handful size) Saracen Releve
1 small scoop fenugreek
1 scoop Alltech Lifeforce (cant recommend this enough for ulcer prone horses)

He has this twice a day

i have spoke to a few people about management after the gg, he does have adlib haylage already but i have heard that hay will be much better for him, is this correct, also hes very under weight at the moment which is why we are investigation ulcers, could you give me any ideas on how to get the weight back on safely, what is best to feed without risking the ulcers returning. thanks x

Its a supplement, works as an alround vit&min but has yea sacc (and other ingredients good for ulcers) contact SlinkyUnicorn on here, knows far more then me on the detail, but is very good a one month supply is £35 so cheaper then feedmark ulcer calm (also good, but have found lifeforce better) or you can buy a big tub for about £60 I think which is 3 months worth so much cheaper.
 
I have used GG on my boy and although it has worked wonders it did take nearly 4 weeks for me to see a change in behaviour so don't be disheartened if it takes a bit of time. I would also advise getting them onto a supplement to support the hind gut as I found the GG really upset it, ending up with colic. I use Gut Balancer from Protoxin and it has worked wonders. Wish I had started it earlier in the GG course though.

As for food he has gone from a pretty high sugar/starch diet to the below
hi fi molasses free
Speedy beet
Protoxin
Haylage balancer
Magnesium
Handful of pony nuts

I have kept my boy on haylage purely because of weight management and all seems ok (touches wood)
 
Hi there, what was the result of the scope? My lad sounds very similar, but he was colicky too. He had ulcers, so went on GG and after a couple of weeks he looked and felt like a different animal- and put on quite a bit of weight! We're now post-GG and trying to maintain him. He's fed Alfa-a mollases free, d&h ers pellets (they're great!), speedibeet, yeasacc, micronized linseed and protexin. He also lives out 24/7. Keep ur chin up, my lad was 1 colic off being pts, and looked awful before GG, now, with careful mangement is fine! :-)

Hi, ours is fed alfa a molasses free, alpha beet (hot soaked in 15mins) and dodson and horrel ERS Pellets. It helped put weight back on really well and didn't fuzz him up.

Hope the scope went okay.
