On Friday my horse was due to walk out of his stable & go into his paddock to graze. As he walked out it was clear to see that he was slightly lame on his front offside led. We put him back into the stable, checked his foot & could not see anything. Farrier came following day , removed the shoe & took a good look & actually saw a slight nick in the ball of his foot. He thought it was probably an abscess either starting or ending. This morning he was hopping lame so we called out the vet. She had a look & decided that it was an abscess & it was in the ball of his foot. She sedated my boy & then went to work. It was a big job but eventually she got to it & there was bloody puss everywhere. The foot was thoroughly washed, iodine liberally poured over it & he was heavily bandaged. We told the vet what we'd done over the last couple of days & she fully agreed with what we did. She said that if we'd called her on Friday she may well not have found the abscess because an abscess grows rapidly. She's coming back on Wednesday to check him over & redress him but if he's still lame tomorrow for us to call her. When I left he looked really good but I'll know more tomorrow. He's 26 years old in a few days & he's very special to us, we've had him 20 years, he's a wonderful horse & he's part of the family.

He's the third from the right in my drawings under the post.

Abscesses are absolutely painful until they drain. Hopefully he recovers quickly. Vet is right that they can come up quite quickly. I have had 1 on me years ago and in about 48-50 hours of the nodule forming, I was able to pop and drain it but my god it got very, very, very painful (was treating it as an abscess with heat and epsom salts but had it confirmed by a doctor just in case as it was so painful)
