just over a year ago i bought my 8 year welsh section d x
in the summer she went badly foot sore so got shoes put on her front hooves (was bare foot when i bought her) after this she then got laminitis

after recovering from the laminitis after having 2 months box rest she then started to come back into work and got heart bars put on (advised by the vet)

she was fine up until she started coming back into full work where she became lame,
the vet came out to check and said its because she has a box hoof and was unbalanced
the farrier came out and sorted it and she was fine for a week before coming lame again, she is now been given rest and has been for 2 weeks now

if anyone has any advice/experiences with this or anything similar, it would be very helpful x

Has the vet taken xrays to see what is really going on, heart bars can cause more harm than good if they are not fitted with xrays to show what is going on with the pedal bone, the other problem with them is that they really require refitting every 4 weeks, if left longer they put pressure in the wrong place.

I would get her xrayed and then you will be able to plan what she needs doing, her diet may need tweaking, the chances are when she was footsore that was actually low grade laminitis, putting shoes on delayed the full blown attack as they gave some protection but they may have allowed the pedal bone to rotate by taking away her frog support.

There are people on here who have more experience than me, however when your horse first went badly footsore, it sounds like it was the laminitis starting. Your horse is probably very grass sensitive.

If it were my horse I would be thinking of taking the shoes off again, using hoof boots to hack out, getting a good trimmer on board for the feet and sorting the horse's diet out. you need to feed a low starch, low sugar and high fibre diet.

My horse has one box hoof at the front. The trimmer I use, tends to leave it like that, rather than trying to make it look like the other one. She is sound and happy and in full work after having been written off.
Cptrayes and Oberon are the best ones on the forum to advise you if you decide to go barefoot again. Good luck in sorting it out and I hope your horse comes sound soon. :)

I think from the start you.jumped the gun by putting shoes on.
If she has been barefoot for a while and on a good diet and foot management putting shoes on just masked the fact more was going on
It could have been laminitis from the start.
Masked then possibly made worse by the heart bars.
Ideally you need nerve blocks and x rays etc.
A thorough lameness work up.

Hope you get it sorted.
