Hi all

Well, my ISH was diagnosed with navicular 4 months ago, we tried the egg bars which didn't do much good. He's now got heart bars and has improved loads but still doesn't feel quite right.

So after selling my soul to my OH and agreeing to let him go fishing when ever he wants! He will pay for Charlie to go to Rockley Farm for barefoot rehabilitation, the results have been amazing for horses with navicular. I'm so excited, he will be away for a least 4 months but I can wait!

Has any one been down the barefoot road and how have you found it? Do people give you a hard time about it?

Thanks in advance.

I have been reading " barefoot performance and barefoot rehabilitation" by nic barker and sarah braithwaite

Is fantastic!!

I look after a 20 month colt and hope to keep him barefoot. the book is well worth a read. . . .

Ah well we spoke on the phone the other night didn't we????? What a shame, I was hoping you'd sell him to me so I could do it! Seriously though, I am so pleased for you. Not only will you almost certainly get back a sound horse, but he will be one of the Project Dexter horses who prove to the whole country what an effective treatment for navicular barefoot is. If you want to share your journey talk to people on uknhcp.myfastforum.org - there are loads of "miracle cure" navicular rehab owners on there.

Ah Cptrayes! Its all because of your phone call! Thankyou so very much! I didn't really want to part with Charlie, I just needed a shove in the right direction! I will have a look at that forum later ta.

My sister's horse was diagnosed with Navicular last year, she also has sidebone and arthritis so is unlikely to be ridden again. Tried shoes and drug treatments with no effect so to try and make her feel comfortable my sister decided to try barefoot.
Skye's feet were found to be an awful shape and in quite a bad way. It's been around 6 months now and the improvement is amazing. While she's still not sound her feet are a good shape and can now start to function properly inside.
While we doubt she will ever be sound enough to be ridden again if we can manage her feet and keep her comfortable and happy then we will be ecstatic.
Good luck with it all, we are very pleased with barefoot and i have the same guy looking after my 11 month old colts feet.

Best of luck, I hope it goes well. There are some amazing success stories.

I know a horse that had 12 months vet/remedial shoeing for foot lameness, not navicular, and the vet was talking PTS.

Since he ws only 8 the owner didn't want this, so after research and consulation about how quickly to remove the shoes (in stages) and after a few weeks barefoot rehabilitation he was sound, back in work and is now competing and doing very well in endurance.

YAY!!!! The best bit is afterwards when you're our riding and people ask why your horse doesn't have shoes - their faces are a picture when you tell them its because they were diagnosed with navicular!!! LOL

Sounds like the book I'm reading http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0851319602/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

I got it so that I could gen up on barefoot, 'cos my new horse has no shoes and I want to keep her that way.

Good luck with the rehab - Holly B

My horse doesn't have Navicular but is , and has been for four years, barefoot. We purposely went out to buy a barefoot horse - found him via the UKNHCP forum.

I think most people on our yard thought we were a bit mad to be keeping a big horse barefoot (That's just for ponies and cobs isn't it?!) and a couple were openly quite derogatory about it. However, since he's never had a lame day and has been out and about with the rest of them doing all RC activities demonstrating that there's nowt wrong with his bare feet, the comments have stopped. The only way to change people's minds is through demonstration IME.

Best of luck with your lad I'm sure he'll do great at Nic's.

You'll see a world of differentce in your horse Curragh and Charlie will improve more than you thought.

I know Nic and she's brilliant - spent a few days there learning from her last year and seeing first hand what she has been doing

Big chance for you to learn a whole lot.
