and his friend is sooo silly!
Went up to ride today, but as Tom is still on restricted outings and Ron needed some fast work OH said he'd groom Tom while I was out then take him for a stroll round the village.
Went to get them in, and they're in the front paddock which they are convinced is totally free of grass (it's not, it's just they're bored of it!) so as soon as they saw us they came galloping across to the fence. put head collars on over the fence, took lead ropes off and walked down the drive to the gate and they followed us down, waited while we opened the gate and put lead ropes back on and then Ron stood like a statue while I shut the gate after us. He was busy looking at my Dad trying to light a bonfire in the rain.
after they'd dried off (and we'd mucked out, swept the yard, moved stuff for dad, sorted the feed room, and moved some haylage bales down to the feed room for the next week) I gave Ron a quick brush off, (ignored the bog brush of a mane as he was feeling objectionable and gave up on the tail as it was still damp) and tacked up. OH came out to start grooming Tom and got shouted at by him!
not sure why, but the horse is a little odd. I got on at the yard and Tom went mental, kicked the door, headbutted OH, and tried cantering in his stable. Ron ignored him.
Left OH dealing with Tom's mentalness and Ron wanted to be off - he power walked up the hill to the forestry gate despite 1001 mountain bikers coming down the hill towards him. Then, once through the gate, I gave him the option of the short steep hill or the long less steep one. He chose the steep one
and gladly cantered up it (well, most of the way!). At the top we stood, looking at the view, teesside fortunately hiden behind the clouds for once, watching patches of rain drifting across the vale of York. Once he'd got his breath back we moved off, a short trot along the flat track (avoiding the pedestrian politely by slowing down for long enough to not fling mud at her!
) and then into flat out gallop up the little hill to the top of the long less steep hill. Ron always comes back to walk politely at the top of the gallop, but then wants to jog down the hill but today he was quite content to amble down it on the buckle end. back down to the forestry gate without a rein contact, and without having to steer, push him on or anything. Through the gate, and he decides to gawp at a walker sitting on a log and skittle past! Back down the road to home, with a brief stop to wash his legs in the stream.
He's such a wonderful horse to hack out on, buckle end, safe, sane and listens (or at least doesn't object) to my ramblings!
Tom meanwhile had stood on OH's toes, smeared him along the wall, broken two pieces of baler twine and that was before OH gave up! But he did get most of the mud off!
ETA - sorry, that was a bit longer than I intended - have a nice warm cupcake fresh from the oven for reading!
