I can't find my last post on Sols lameness , so I'll do a quick recap .

September 11th , back lady came out and wanted her to have X-rays in her back (another story) she wanted her workload to increase to 2hours (or there abouts) to see if the tension increased or improved in her back .
She was in 2 weeks of hard work when she wasn't quite right .

Vet came out to look at her back , said that was all A ok (in his opinion) but said she was lame ( same leg she had the OR injury on middle of August )
He wanted her to be on field rest and no work as she was 6/10th lame on her right fore .

He came back 2 weeks later and said there had been a big improvment and she was only 1/10th lame . So he wanted her to be hacked out in walk twice/three times a week .

I have been doing this since (up until last thursday ) . Per (another vet) was out to do routine jabs so he said he would look at her . He notice that , when she was trotted up in hand the first two time she was lame , and after two flexion tests (lower and higher

) she was sound . He also said that the lameness would have to be worse to nerve block as the lameness is so subtle it would be difficult to pinpoint .

Per was going to discuss his findings with Alan and ring me back . He also suggested riding her 4 times a week in W,T or brief canters .

Sorry for the very rambly post , but I am very anxious about riding her when the lameness hasn't improved . Am also worried that they can't find out whats wrong with her .

So, she had quite a bad lameness in her foreleg which the back lady thought was back related?! And advised hard work before the vet saw her?!

Then the vet saw her as she wasnt improving. Field rest helped a lot.

Light work hasnt really worsened the problem as she's still 1/10 lame but it also hasnt got rid of the problem.

I'd have her in for a full work up- scans, nerve-blocks and x-rays. If the vets wont do it because she isnt deemed lame enough (yet he could tell you she wasnt sound?!) then I'd ask for a referral to somewhere which will do a work up.

You know my feelings when it comes to the vets you talk about.

Their word is gospel as far as I'm concerned - so have no additional words of wisdom or suggestions for you.

I suspect the next course of action is going to be x-rays if none of you are happy.

Thanks Bossanova .
Lamness and Back are totally unrelated

But the vet was out to look and he picked up on her lameness and thought it needed more investigation .

Field rest made huge improvement , then light work didn't make it worse and it has slightly improved but she is still not sound .

Really what I meant to ask in my original post is what suggestions can I put forward to Per and Alan (xrays etc) as we would really prefer to find the reason before having to make it worse to make it better

Yes , I do trust Per and Alan . But I just don't feel comfortable riding her to make it worse (if that makes sense)

It might just be me being ridiculous and this is common practice in diagnosing lameness but I was just unsure . At the same time I don't want to waste there time and effort (and my money) when nothing can be found with her current level of lamness

Yes it does, and I would feel the same. I probably wouldn't ride her.

Alan is very good at discussing these things at length - but I have found that you have to ask the right questions.

Speak to him about how you feel - tell him that you are happy to progress with more expensive investigations (ie x rays, scans etc.) and see how you feel then.

It can be terribly frustrating when you can't get an answer to a problem - and I feel your frustration. xxx

Thankyou

Am waiting for him to ring me back and was going to have a chat with him .
I'm just not sure what I should be asking for (hence my awfully written post)

I am indeed a veterinary numpty (hence having Alan on speed-dial now ! )

Chepstow vets, Nick West... I used to use park and when my mare went lame they were suggesting tatics that i disagreed with (regardless of being related to them) and called Nick out... he was there 30 mins and booked her straight in for xrays etc.

1 week later i had my diagnosis, my expected future prognosis and full support to help take the dealers to court including letters personally written by nick for the court and for my insurance claim.

Nick even answers his phone with... 'Hi Emma' now Bless him!

I dont have any answers for sols lameness im afraid but i do empathise hugely...as i know how it feels- although my mare was 9yo so alot older than sol its still never easy.
Shes now fully retired and enjoying making some babies for a friend.

What type of horse is Sol? If the horse has lameness then she may be holding herself which in turn will cause back pain. We had the physio to our pony twice a week for ages but it turned out that he had navicular which as you know is unheard of in a 122cms show pony. I would always go for the mri first as last, cos you end up paying out for visits, nerve blocks, x-rays etc and its really only the mri which can tell you exactly whats going on.
