my pony has never been one to ever drink alot but this last week he doesnt seem to have been driking at all! He has access to fresh clean water in stable and field at all times. In the past to encourge him to drink i have added apple juice, apple lyets which is a powder type thing and suger beet which has been the most succesful but im trying to get some weight off him so dont want him eating it once hes drunk the water! Any suggestions? thought i might try a salt lick to make him thirsty but worried that might just make him more dehydrated! Any suggestions would be great! thanks :)

If he is on restricted or soaked hay he may not need much water, this last week mine have drunk less as it has been colder again.
Give him a salt lick if he wants salt he will use it and drink as much as he requires, if you are really concerned that he is getting dehydrated, if he is sweating a lot when working, put some salt in his feed each day and give him the water with very little speedibeet in it, eating a little will not put weight on him.
I had one horse that preferred his water in the field once it was not so fresh, he had 2 tubs, 1 was left and just topped up, the other fresh each day, he always drank the "dirty" water never the nice fresh clean one.

I have cut down on his haylage because of his weight and what with the weather being how it is has maybe been a factor. think i will get a salt lick see if it makes any difference thanks for the advice :)

My horse has 12 hour soaked hay (good doer so on a diet all the time virtually) and she doesn't really touch her water at all because she is getting enough from her soaked hay! Also water down his feed (mine only has chaff for supplements and I water it down a fair bit)
Soaking is also good for weight loss so it could be win win!!! :)

I was also concerned one of mine wasn't drinking this past week.....turns out she's been helping herself to a puddle in the field!

Mine have all cut down a hell of a lot on their water intake this week due to the weather.
It has peed it down all week here so the grass in the field is very wet so they are taking plenty of water in that way.
If it's been raining a lot where you are i'd suspect this will be the reason!:)

Mines not drinking from his stable over the past week, but weve had lots of rain, the grass is wet so he will be getting extra water from that, give him sloppy feed, mine also has a salt lick in his stable. I wouldnt be too concerned if hes weeing as normal
