i left a bag of carrots on the side whilst i went to open the gate at the yard, next thing i knew the carrots were all over the floor (half gone may i add

) and the plastic bag was no where to be seen.
searched and searched for the bag and started to think he must have eaten it... so phoned the vet gave him some bran mash and oil and i'm going back up at 9 to go and check on him

a bit worried - i'm also very shocked that he would eat a plastic bag! although the other day he tried to eat my phone so i shouldnt be too suprised
grin.gif
we asked everyone if they had seen it and picked it up but it seems to have disapeared off the face of the earth - or into his tummy

is there anything else i can do?

blimey, very runny sugar beat acts as a laxative but id phone the vet before feeding him anything else, as long as its very runny it should'nt cause any blockages if he has eaten the bag, is he a cob by any chance they eat everything, i thought my old cob ate my mobile, turned out it was in the bottom of his water bucket, still works though, after a dry out in the sun!

lmao! Hacking out "Rowan check his poo" "I can see something coming from his bum" hahaha!

Poor P pony! Im sure Doug is keeping him awake with his treat ball

(((vibessss)))

I would try not to worry too much, if you have given him bran and oil hopefully that should do it.

We had one horse rip open a sack one day and start eating the contents, were doing renovations at the time, silly horse didn't realise it was concrete mix and not feed

He was fine though, never had any problems.

our stables are in barnsand no it hasnt been windy - we have checked everywhere. if i do find it i will be so relieved!

My sisters horse has a metal fetish, and always wants to lick gates or the top of a stable door after he has finished his tea

Does he ever get laminitis? Just keep an eye tomorrow as the main problem is the overload of sugar in the gut from the carrots.

Plastic bags don't usually cause laminitis though

But if he isn't a lami sort, should be ok

My cob once stole an empty sandwich bag from my pocket and ate it before I could stop him, with no ill-effects at all.

Years ago we got a Haflinger in to break and the next day he passed a more or less intact plastic carrot bag. Didn't seem to faze him at all.

good stories- keep them coming
grin.gif

just been to check him and he wasnt very impressed at waking him up! he has done a poo so fingers crossed he will be fine. will be up early to give him some more mash before he goes out

Plastic bags don't often do any harm, just keep an eye on him 48 hours in case.

It happened 2 my old horse as well. He ate a tesco bag, a full loaf od bread and the plastic bag the bread was in! I'd only had him for a week and hadn't realised how greedy he was! I panicked, but he was fine, no ill effects!!

Dont worry. My horse has eaten a bin bag and an empty crisp bag.

How do I know?

I found them in his poops neatly packed up. On separate occasions.

Try to keep calm and search his poops to be sure it has passed as nature intended.

Fingers crossed for you, am sure he will be fine.

One of mine ate a bag a couple of years ago. We have campers in the field next to our paddock for one month of the year, and I can only assume a bit of their rubbish had wafted over the fence. Just happened to be out pooh picking and notice the horse chewing on something odd. By the time I realised what it was and got over to her - it was all gone. It looked like one of those plastic bags that multi-packs of apples come in from Tesco. She was fine.

Our old shetland pony once ate a stretch armstrong toy.

Whoever said horses can't be sick were wrong, he regurgitated the whole lot from his mouth about five minutes later. The most panic stricken five minutes I ever had with him. My Oh had him in a headlock and was trying to shove him arm in his mouth to see if he could find bits of it

It was green and I think he thought it was an apple, but yes, horses DO eat funny things.

Plastic bags are easily broken down/biodegradable these days - I reckon stomach acid will just dissolve a lot of it. I am sure he'll be fine, I understand you are worried though - my horse ate a plastic mushroom attached to steel bendy wire once (the xmas decoration kind) and was fine...

Best story goes to Charlie! I know it's horrible and if i saw a horse eat a stretch armstrong i would be beside myself, but it didn't half make me PMSL reading that! Sorry!

I've never seen any eat anything that silly so can't be any use i'm affraid. One ate 3 of those small beaded bracelets though, cue me scooping beads out of his mouth frantically. He wasn't even mine- another livery who i had stopped to say hi to over the fence. Hope his owner didn't find sparkly blue beaded poo! He was fine though.

Hope he's ok, keep us updated

thanks for all the stories! been to see him this morning and he was fine - no sign of the bag though
tongue.gif

gave him some more bran mash so that should do the trick
smile.gif

I know it's not a horse, but we had a spaniel that regularly ate unsuitable things - j cloths were a particular favourite. He was fine, but we suffered from the consant stress!

Ok so it wasnt a horse, but a friends dog ate a whole leg of lamb which was left to "bleed" on the side. the dog ate the lamb and the bloody tea towel! Days passed without the poor thing going to the toilet, and one day they came home and his bottom had exploded (their word not mine) with poo, all over the kitchen and the tea towel was on the floor
