This morning I went to turn my horses out and discovered one of them with a large lump on his forehead about the size of my fist. his eyes were swollen as well. So phone call to the vet, trip to the surgery and an endoscopy and xray later, my horse has been diagnosed with a 2cm fracture to his skull - across his forehead level with his eye. Now the mystery, how the hell has he done it. he has no wound, no damage to the skin at all. No mud on his face. In fact no evidence at all to suggest something untoward has happened. He is in with my 3 other horses, all of which are smaller than him, only 1 of which has shoes on. They never kick each other, and surely if it was a kick there would have been damage or mud. Vet and I think he has either headbutted a tree or the ground. But he must have done it with real force to get a fracture the size he has and if so how come no wound. I know he is not a particularly bright horse, in fact we call him a dutch dumblood, but that really is an amazing level of stupidity.
Bless him, I think he has a serious headache, and looks like a bloke with a bad hangover. Hopefully the painkillers and anti inflammatorys will kick in shortly. The vet thinks he will be fine - it will just take about 6 to 8 weeks to heal and he can go out in the field as normal - just no riding.
