My horse nearly bled to death last night

Turned up at the yard this morning to find blood everywhere; patches all over the yard and the stable awash, as if someone had had their throat cut in there. Ellie was still standing, thankfully, but with her lower hind leg soaked in blood. Phoned the vet in a wibbly manner. She arrived within 15 minutes and found that poor Ellie had a bluntish puncture wound to her artery. As the vet cleaned it, it started pumping blood again. The vet applied a big bandage and this stemmed the flow. Thankfully no tendons or anything involved. Ellie on antibiotics, box rest and having another vet call tomorrow. After searching for the cause, we have cautiously concluded that she lay on a flint in her mini paddock and cut the artery as she got up. I feel very lucky that I was calling the vet not the hunt this morning....

We had a similar situ with a 2 year old where he walked over a metal sheet which flipped up and got the artery on his hind leg. Blood was spurting out his leg and he wouldn't stand still (which made the blood spurt even further) called vet who took 45 minutes to arrive (was chased about 3 times to find out how much longer she would be!) when she finally arrived she was shocked to see the entire yard swimming in blood, horse standing looking rather weak and me holding about a blood soaked wad of cotton wool onto his leg like my life depended on it. Apparently owners often 'over exagerate' about wounds and she didn't think he had actually burst an artery...change vets after that one!

Aw thanks again everyone. It's certainly not what you expect to find first thing in the morning! Ellie had her leg checked by my vet today and she said it looks fine. Bandage changed and antibiotics left for 5 days. Ellie hated having the bandage changed- she stomped and squished us

All I have got to do now is finish hosing all the blood away..

, thankfully didn't turn out as bad as it could of been, still must of been very scary at the time.

Hope she makes a speedy recovery and is back to her self very soon.
