I have recently changed my 16"2 Cob X Thoroughbreds feed to alfafa A, fast fibre nuts and oats from chaff and allen and page 'sustain'. He is lacking energy when competing thus catching poles when lazy. Sustain made him go fizzy rather than building his energy levels. I have been looking into feeds further as the oats haven't seemed to touch him and I didn't want to end up having to feed him tonnes. What are peoples views on lupins and linseed oils? Or other feeds than wont increase his weight but give him that added boost of energy?
He is currently jumping 1m and 1.05 at BSJA and training towards eventing next year. Competing most weekends and he is exercised 5/6 times a week.

I despise TopSpec Turbo (and super conditioning flakes). Cannot begin to explain the trouble those wretched feeds have cost me.

And feed which supplies energy will do so in the form of calories. Calories put weight on. It sounds like a fitness issue, training problem or some other physical issue. Imo it's best to work on fitness and training, whilst supplying the horse with balanced minerals, sufficient protein and plenty of fibre.

If you still have problems after that then I'd call a vet to do some bloods.

I agreed a blood test would make sure he is all ok!!! worth spending the money, we bought a BSJA jumping machine whom was the same has your explaining, rode her 6x week really fit but really lacked energy and stamina, she ended up having exhaustion, gave her time off and really fed her up and got her a liquid supplement from the vets, if i can remember she had 3 months off and she came back a different horse and never had a problem with her after that. Good luck hun xxxx

I found the biggest difference to my horse's energy levels was switching from a bog standard 'feed balancer' to a mineral balancer which omitted iron - so I now feed Forageplus Performance Balancer with a bit of alfalfa chaff, salt and micronised linseed. If I need any more energy I add a small 'lunch' of a couple of handfuls soaked unmollassed beetpulp. I haven't run out of horse this year, whereas last year we'd run out of stamina by day 2 of a show and she'd take a few days to recover.
