My horse noticed I was crying today ...

Thank you everybody for your lovely posts. And thank you for your kind words about my cat (RIP).

I've just logged in now and read all your posts, and they are all beautiful stories of the bond we have with our amazing horses. I'm not normally a gushy person, but these posts are good to read.

thank you.

I am so very sorry to hear about your cat.

I never forget, I was about 15 (14years ago now) and I was very upset, my then boyfriend dumped me. I remember going out to the field to see the horses, my mare who I still have now came up to me, she stopped eating, which she hardly ever does and just stood with me, I remember feeling very touched as I felt she was empathising in some basic way...

What an amazing post.
I don't know if I am an emotional wuss but I am sitting here crying at the touching stories people have written.
We should feel honoured to have the company of such amazing creatures.

Sorry to hear about your cat, rip little one.

My horses know when I am upset or hurt. 3 weeks ago I had an op on my hand, and couldn't see them for a week. On week 2 I went back to doing them still struggling with my hand, couldn't do much with it. They knew, and were very gentle with me, even when I took my mare out for a ride (one handed :o ) she was exciteable, but did everything I asked of her using my weight, even slowing down (which she rarely does, no matter how you ask her!) and generally seemed that I just had to think it to have it happen :)

12 years ago my old boy knew I was pregnant when I was only 6 weeks gone, his whole treatment of me changed instantly, and remained that way after I had my son, if I had him with me. He did revert back to normal relationship when I was alone with him, but he'd always looked after me carefully anyway, I was just to young and inexperienced to realise how different he was to other horses until I grew up a bit :D:o

I too am in tears reading these stories :)

Sorry to hear about your little pusscat:(

My horse was a present from my Dad when I lost my Mum to cancer, so he had *a lot* of crying to put up with! Luckily he has a lovely snuggly mane and doesn't seem to mind :)

That was 12 years ago, and he has been with me through so many good and bad times, 3 (!) university degrees and a number of house/country moves. He's my rock!

I was at a show once and warming up. My horse was being a bit of an idiot and wasn't concentrating properly, all off a sudden she suddenly slipped and completely went over. We ended up both being on the ground (thankfully she didn't land on me) with my foot from the other side still trapped in the stirrup. I was panicking as obviously a horses natural instinct is to get straight back onto their feet and I would have been hanging off her side being dragged on the ground.
However she just lay there really quietly until I`d got my foot out before slowly getting up, my friend who ran over to help me out also said she was looking around at me to see where I was. She obviously knew something was wrong and was looking out for me :) They really are special creatures :)

Animals understand a great deal, they understand us on a different level. We just have to listen to be able to hear them back.

I feel for you regarding your cat, not many months ago I had to make the decision to put one of mine to sleep. I'd only had her three years and took her on from my sister. She was amazing, she was the matriac (sp?) to my other five and was dominant over my two dogs as well :)

Topsey - Last pic in my sig xx

About a year ago I went up to the field with the horses in when I was upset and the Welsh Cob leader of the herd who had turned semi-feral from not much handling over the recent years (he was an absolute bugger to get near normally and impossible to catch) and I remember sitting by the fence on his side and him slowly (took him about twenty minutes to sidle up to me) and gently lick and nibble my knee, I've worked with him since and we've really got a bond now, took a while but it's so so worth it! He really seemed to genuinely realise something was wrong.

And recently my baby dartmoors saw me coming down the drive past the field and came over to the fence to cheer me up and have a cuddle (I was upset from failing a test!) and this is rare for them, especially one who's most important thing in life is eating!!

Sorry to hear about your cat. RIP little one!

I don't tend to cry around Dorey much, but she knows when I'm angry/upset and is horrible to deal with. She is mirroring how I feel and if I can't deal with me, I certainly can't deal with her!!!

But one of my favourite stories to tell isn't about when I was sad, or her being particularly gentle. I'd fallen off and badly hit my head. Having walked across the field to catch her, I then sat down with my head between my knees. My mum had seen me fall and came out to see if I was okay, taking Dorey off me.
After a couple of minutes, my mum, sounding a little concerned said:
"Kat, can you get up and let Dorey know you're alright"
Dorey was trying to knock my mum over to get to me, she was pretty frantic! As soon as I got up and gave her a cuddle, she relaxed.

Nice to know she'd care if she killed me. PMSL!

What amazing stories, really sorry to hear about your
cat.

I don't have a horse story to share, but I have a cat one.

On the day I had my old cat pts, I was really upset, I'd had her 18 yrs and was heartbroken. That afternoon I set off to walk to do my horse, she was at that time probably less than a 10 minute walk from my parents house, but our other cat followed me the whole way, even though I shooed him back, he sat at the gate to the field and waited and then walked home with me.

He's never done that before or since. I guess he just knew I needed a friend, which is even more amazing considering cats usually only look out for themselves! (which is one of the reasons I like them)
