Hi, I have an 8 year old section D mare that is not visibly lame in any gate, including on a circle and has no performance issues. However, when walking on concrete it sounds as though she is slamming one foot down. I can’t even distinguish which leg it is. Others have heard it too but can’t detect any lameness. I was just after some advice. Would you be concerned?

Does she have one foot either more concave or less concave than the other three? That will do it, and it's not uncommon especially in front feet if the have a foot they prefer to stick forwards when they eat.

If this sound is something new, its worth checking on a tight circle. Vet advised me years ago to shut my eyes and listen, when checking for lameness. The ear doesn't lie, but the eyes do, particularly with a horse that has different coloured hooves and legs.
