As the title says.... Ellie and I were enjoying our hack in the sun until 3 dogs (off the lead) and their owner came past us. I had jumped off ellie to walk her over a scary ditch and as I was about to get back on, I noticed one of the dogs had shot out from behind Ellie n she was holding her hind leg up! I called out to the dog owner who was swiftly walking off, I said I think your dogs bitten my horse... She replied " no, she doesn't bite horses" , that's when I found the fresh graze type Mark on the inside of Ellies hock! I made her come over to have a look, and took her number off her incase this gets infected and I need the vet. All this while her dogs are still running about loose and barking at Ellie!! I'm so annoyed, why can't dog walkers put their mutts on a lead just for a few minutes while we pass? Luckily it's nots a puncture wound and Ellie seems none the worse for her experience. Crammy hills used to be a great place to ride but it's becoming terrible for loose dogs! I'm sure if our horses were going about kicking the dogs we'd be banned off there in a shot, shame the irresponsible dog walkers get away with it!! Rant over :-)

Do you think it's more likely that the graze was there before as this doesn't sound like a dog bite injury.

Wouldn't your mare have kicked the dog if she had been bitten (as any horse would do??)

I do agree with amymay, doesnt sound liek a dog bite, they are usually puncture wounds. But you may well be correct. Well done for having the nerve to get the owner back to look and give her number many would hvae walked off ignoring your calls!

It is a shame when people dont put dogs on leads, im lucky as my dog is mahoosive so we just grab her collar and thats that but we dont even let her run upto other dogs let alone horses even though she is a big softy!

Lol no... The "graze" wasn't already there. It's exactly where the dog had been and although Ellie didn't kick out.. She did jump and spin away from the dog and then stood holding her leg up. There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that it was already there.

No all horses actually kick out when they get bit, my friends horse actually froze in fear while a stuffy type dog was latched on to his hind leg. They all react differently.

Hope your mare is ok, might be worth getting checked over by the vet, my Ellie was on antibiotics for quite a while.

Unfortunately AmyMay, not all horses will kick - my mare was attacked on a hack by a pitbull type. It ripped her brushing and knee boots off in pieces then clawed and bit her legs, belly and even climbed up her backlegs to get her behind the saddle. She kept trying to step over it and walk away. I got a £80 bill to replace the boots and £110 vets bill. That was over 15 years ago and she still shakes if she meets a dog she doesn't know. Her hind legs are covered in scars. After that event we had a doberman swinging off her tail, a boxer nearly put us both in the Mersey and two dobemans, one on each side - actually we won that one because I spun her into their owner and then asked the stupid cow how she liked to be on the receiving end.
