So have I been trying to get my horse to lose weight she gets no hard feed, small piles of haylage . She also only has light rug on since she is clipped and she also gets plenty of exercise 1 hour of fast work 6 days a week and the feld she is in has no grass . She lost loads of weight in the start of the winter she was the perfect weight but she seems to have gotten fat again. any suggestions

The grass has started growing where I am.

What do you class as fast work? Up the work - exercise her more often each week.

Photos would help a little.
What's the weather amd temperature been like as it's easy to look at a field that is growing and think nothing is happening and it's just because the horse is eating it as fast as it comes through.

If she is gaining weight she ahs more calories than exercise. Perhaps remove the haylage and repalce with soaked hay or a hay straw mix? What is it that you class as hard work if it is only 1 hour a day?

Soaked hay instead of haylage made a huge difference to my good-doer. The haylage was low calorie but even so, he gained weight/didn’t lose any on it. He gets a greater volume of hay now but is much slimmer because it’s soaked.

I have stopped giving mine any hay as grass is coming through rapidly. Grazing muzzle on soon. I honestly can see a difference in grass length from morning to afternoon it growing so well. Even small area of mud has green tinge to it. Mowed my lawn every week for last 4 weeks and needs doing again now and was last cut on Saturday. In South east on well drained sandy soil.

Im envious...with all the rain sitting on the soil keeping it cool, all i see is brownish yellowish faint greenish tinge all over the fields here. Its been a wet march this year for us ....due a few days without rain so fingers crossed the grass starts growing!

The grass is causing mine to balloon. The field is a bog so I can't build a track, but there is a bit fenced off so I can see how fast the grass is growing. Muzzle has been dusted off
