There is nothing wrong with the hay, if I put it in a net with large holes or on the floor he eats it fine! He just wont touch it if its in a small holed net. I dont know whether he cant get hold of it properly, whether he doesnt like the feel of the mesh stuff on his lips or is just lazy. I know he wont starve but I do worry about him standing in for too long with nothing to chew on. Obviously the answer is not to use the small holed net but does anyone else have a horse like this? (I would say perhaps hes not very bright but he is actually quite clever most of the time:) )

Have you considered the possibility that he might have neck pain? There has been evidence suggesting that small-holed nets can aggravate or possibly cause neck problems because the horse has to shake his head about so much to get the hay out. Together with the fact that horses naturally eat with their heads down, the height of the net /eating position could be an issue too.

I used to have one the same, he was just lazy and didn't want to put the extra effort in!
If you need the hay to last will he eat a double netted haynet with normal holes?:)
