My 4yo thoroughbred has a big problem overtaking other horses out hacking. She is absolutely brilliant both in front and behind. However if she follows my sister (who has a tiny pony) she can't canter slow enough to stay behind. If I try and make her overtake she sticks her head on the floor and 'broncs' or canters into the pony and threatens to kick her... any way of getting out of going past. I find it really strange as she is happy to ride in front?!

Any ideas are very welcome!

Well the obvious answer is to make sure you're in front before you start cantering, or start cantering upsides each other.

Rather than attempting to overtake, simply ask the other horse to slow down and drop back to your side. Remember, your horse is only four, so much of her reluctance could be down to confidence.

I can walk side by side with the other horse, but if I ever was to try and encourage her to go ahead she does an almost spin/rear type thing. With the canter she broncs as soon as she catches up, even if we stay behind... now I wonder if that is partly because she is struggling to canter that slowly (but she knows ive asked her to canter- so perhaps confusion) and partly because she won't overtake. I find it odd because she's pretty confident riding out at the front. Maybe if I try riding along side a different horse with a slightly quicker pace for a while?
