my horse will not pee when we are out , she will go all day with out peeing and then when i leave her onto the yard she will run into her stable and pee. what can i do to get her to pee when we're out ? i dont want her being in discomfort all day :(

I will watch this with interest - i have this issue with my gelding. He just wont "go" if we are out anywhere....Which is a pain if we are out and about! Like this sunday we are off to Brechin and i get paranoid as he must be holding it in for the whole day! Weird horses...

Our little mare does just this. She has gone for all day at a show before. I was really concerned. Occasionally she used to get in a really foul mood towards the end of the day and would not accept my leg or stop at a fence (she is NOT a stoppy horse!) and would be grumpy and ears back and untill we got home where she would rush to her 'pee patch' and relieve herself. One time at a show she was clearly so desperate she started 'dribbling' but still no proper wee! I dont think she understand she COULD wee with tack on / not in her field. So i hav started training her to wee on command. This is in the very early stages, but whenever I see her weeing in the field I have been whistling. In the hopes that one day she will wee to whistle command

BUT yesterday I was hacking out with a friend on our other horse and the other horse wee'd. Then this little mare (with me still on board) proceeded to wee :D now this is the first time she has, but I am hoping now she has realised it is physically possible, she will wee when we are competing.

I guess there would be a point where she just HAS to go? Or try training your horse to wee? (I am still not sure if this will be successful - I will let you know!)

Another one who wont go when out. almost cant get throught the stable door before he goes when back at home, tried lots of bedding in box, wistling, shakeing bed about, walking in long grass if i can find it . . .

dont think he goes in the field tho when turned out as its first thing he does when brought in - not sure how he's managing at the mo he's out 24/7 !!

Iv had my gelding 11 years and he has never peed or pooed when we are out. He has a thing about going to the toilet if there are other horses watching I think!

He wont even go if he is stood tied up on the yard. He starts messing about, pacing back and forth untill i put him back in his stable where he immediately relieves himself! Before I figured this out there was one time I thought he was seriously ill because he started shaking. Turns out He just really needed to go!

Its quite funny if we go out on a long ride because if he needs the toilet he starts rushing and jogging towards the end of a ride because he is desparate! Have got off and led him behind a bush for a bit of privacy before now!! Needless to say that didnt work!

Doesnt seem to have a problem in the field tho!

I have given up worrying about him now.

My mare use to pee every time she went in to her stable at night. So to save bedding i started to catch it in a purple bucket. This turning in to a routine of enter stable, pee in purple bucket and the i fetch her tea. So now even if she doesn’t really need a pee she will have a tiny go so she gets her tea faster. (My mum thinks this is animal cruelty ). The point of my rambling is that it started just at night when she went in her stable. Now though if i tell her to have a wee and produce the purple bucket, she will pretty much go 99% of the time even if it’s just a tiny one. She sometimes has an expression on her face that says the things us horses have to do to please these people!! She won’t do it for anyone though. So maybe you can teach a command?

I may try training her on command to "wee" . i've got alot of shows and hunting season in october ? if im correct. could be some fun training her too :) have any of you overcome this problem ? what methods did you use ? and how long ?

I have heard from a few old hunting folk that is IS possible to get them to wee on command if you whistle every time you see them weeing then they wil associate the two and will wee when you whistle... So this is what I am doing - I have been doing this for just over a week now. I will let you know my progress

Does she routinely wee at any point - say when you put her back in the stable? I did hear of someone training their horse to wee in a certain colour bucket, by every time the horse made a move to wee they shoved the bright colour bucket under it - and somehow, after persevereance the horse learnt to wee in the bucket when it was produced!!!

My mare doesn't like to wee in public either- in the winter it tends to be one of the first things she does when she is brought into her stable and she will usually try have a wee before being turned out also! I try to catch it in a bucket to save bedding/mucking out, but she's not a fan of this and I have to time it just right to catch it- too quick and she'll stop and turn round for a nosey in case that bucket has food in it...!

When out competing, she won't pee while tied up to the back of the trailer or being led around in hand, however she will pee if put back on the trailer and the ramp goes up. Must feel "private" enough for her?! So you could maybe try putting him back in lorry/trailer to see if that encourages him?

We've had this problem with our gelding. The previous 2 seasons he's refused to pee, he'll be dribbling urine but still wouldn't go (could be over 12 hrs sometimes).
This season we've changed yards and he's had a pee at every event this year (could be a coincidence). Much happier pony now he doesn't have to cross his legs all day.

Our gelding was the same for the first 2 years we had him, he would wait all day & you could tell he was bursting!! As soon as he got off the trailer at home he would do it all over the road!! We did the whole whistling & bucket thing too!! Once by accident really she took him off to a very quiet corner as he was bursting again, started whistling while she stood up (as she usually did when trying to make him go) & he actually did go!!! Now he doesn't care will go everywhere & about 4 times a day is a norm!! In fact the daughter moans that he's having a wee AGAIN!! I think once they've done it the first time they won't be shy anymore, for us it was just to keep persevering with the whistling whilst in a quiet area!@ good luck, I know how annoying it can be.!!
