I was getting SO fed up with the livery yard I was at, there was no grass as there are too many horses there so I had to take my young mare away to alternative grazing as she was losing weight, I couldnt feed her enough hay/hard food to keep her weight up as she really needs good grass. I had the stable/field paid up for another 3 weeks after Una left (was planning to take her back after I'd rested the field for a couple of weeks), but YO rented them out to another horse about 2 days after I took her away!! It ate the entire field down so there was less than we had to start with...! And the final straw came at the beginning of the week when "someone" let my other horse out with the new one!! Mine is rather old and i'd told the YO he is not the best natured horse with others and hates geldings (as new one is). Charlie broke a stifle a few years ago in an eventing fall and nearly had to be pts because of it so im very careful with him and would never, ever turn him out with anything other than Una. Anyway, found him out in the field with this horse, hopping lame and covered in bites and kicks, one on his broken stifle, that he could barely put weight on!!! My worst nightmare.... He's been on box rest all week, but was sound enough yesterday for me to ride Una down and lead Charlie back from her to their new home.

I cannot even describe how lovely it is to have them both together, safe and with GRASS!!! Charlie is already looking 100% better and Una is so pleased to have him home. The fields are all mine, no danger of any other horses turning up, so im really glad about that. Plus its only a 10 mins walk from my house, couldnt be more perfect! :D

I meant to get some pics of them this evening but forgot the cam, but thought i'd brighten this thread up with these few of their new home. Its not much, but my two ponies (and the dogs!!) love it!!

That's great news! Oldies are such a worry and some YO's think its OK to chuck them out with anything.

Thanks guys! My horses are very important to me, and Charlie the oldie I have pretty much grown up with (got him when i was 12 and im 26 this year...!!!) so he is part of the family really. I just couldnt believe that someone would mess with someone elses horse like that, I was just furious. Started packing my stuff up and moving it out as soon as i'd sorted him. If anything serious had happened a rather large vets bill would have been landing on the owner of the other horse for letting it out (apparently ;) ). Thankfully, vet says its just tissue damage/bruising... I was paying for private turnout though, people should respect that!! Its just good manners.

I do agree they should have repsected your private turnout but one thing I noticed when looking for yards with my oldie was how few actually HAVE to deal with them. Many YO's may have experience but their younger staff members and other liveries don't. After one disastrous yard where she was bullied unmercifully and chased off food and the YP maade a joke about how he could play piano on her ribs (!) I asked every yard I enquired at if they had veterans and how they managed them. Where do all the oldies go? I assume people keep them at home or put them in retirement livery?

I noticed the same, there was only one other oldie at the yard (a companion horse). I couldnt imagine having my boy all these years and letting him go..!!

My yard was all DIY livery, you were responsible for looking after your own horses entirely so didnt have any staff or anything. Which is what made me more angry, its one thing for someone to make a mistake when turning one of a whole stable yard full of horses out. But I had put my horse in his field and someone intentionally let him out! SO rude.
