I'm a little puzzled this year by the colour of my horses' summer coat. I have had him for over 9 years and his summer coat has always been a very deep red bay - wherever we go people always comment on him.

This year though his summer coat is very light bay, I know he still has time to turn before the real summer gets here but it is unusual for him to be this colour at this time of year.

Has anyone experience of anything similar?

Totaly normal for horses to start to look a bit washed out/paler as they age. It is the horsey equivalent of going grey in humans! Browns/bays go pale, dapple/steel greys go white etc, etc.

Yes I did think it maybe his age, he's not as young as he likes to think anymore! I just didn't expect for it to be quite so sudden!

ive had the same problem this year my mare is dark bay though winter and summer light brown this summer shes solid black its weird

Oh so it's not only me that has noticed a difference this year then! Makes me feel a little better about it!

ive only had my 3yrold for a year but last year when i got him he was (this time of year) mahogony(sp) bay,,,, this year hes a beautiful bright bay, he looks fab for it i hope it stays!!!

Does his summer colour change depending on whether you clip?

If Benj is clipped very early, he will stay black, but if he gets clipped a little later then he will go light brown!

Arrr now that's an interesting spin on it... Osc wasn't clipped this winter. Saying that for the last few years he hasn't been fully clipped, but I guess it may make a difference.
