My horse is turned out with 4 other horses. One of the young horses that my horse is turned out with has been chewing on my horses tail. My horse had a thick beautifull tail prior. We have tried Stop Chew, McNasty, and currently are about to try braiding his tail and soaking it with a hot sauce. Nothing has worked yet. He still has his tail, it is just choppy and not as thick and pretty as it once was

He loves his field, and I really do not want to move my horse away from his nice big area and his friends because of this one tail chewer. This yearling (the chewer) was just gelded a few weeks ago. I miss my horses pretty tail and I do not want to irritate his skin with all the different approaches. Does anyone have any suggestion?

Try Bitter Apple Spray from your small animal vets, we use it on our GSDs tail because our Border Collie keeps biting it and trying to drag him by it and he's too stoooopid to stop her. It hasn't stopped her completely but is greatly reduced and it definitely tastes bad because you should see the faces she pulls when she gets a mouthful!

Careful with the hot sauce a friend of mine tried that, and the horse in question flicked his tail spraying her in the eye with hot sauce.............. the screams she gave i really thought she was dying!!!

Often I wish that the chewer could be placed in another paddock, it would make life so much easier. The chewer belongs to the owner of the barn so not much I can say. The owner is a wonderfull lady, but the chewing situation her horse is causing is not ideal. I think I might try the mustard powder and water or the bitter apple. How much mustard powder to water would I use to make it effective? Will this irritate his skin? Thank you so much for all your suggestions, hopefully all of this chewing will end soon.

I think I will stay away from the hot sauce, that sounds awful! haha! I hear hot sauce leaves a red tint to the tail anyways. That probably would not add an attractive factor to the chewed tail of a big gray horse. I am so sad that this once thick and beautifull tail is now damaged.

I tried wrapping his tail already, but the chewer pulled off the bag. mabey there is a better way to wrap so this baby will not be able to pull bag off. I like that idea. I just have never had to wrap any of my horses tails so I dont really know the trick of keeping it from being pulled off. Do you think it would be wise to just braid the tail then spray it really well with Bitter Apple?

My mare's tail got chewed by the babies - it went from a beautiful thick tail to a rat's tail in days. I mixed hot curry powder with vaseline and coated her tail well with it (messy but you can wash it out later) - it worked a treat, they soon left it alone after that

Had thr same problem. I bought one of those tail wraps that you plait into the tail, so it's quite hard to be pulled off. It's worked a treat! Thank goodness!!
