Hello all :)

A week last Friday I flew up to Scotland to stay with my OH for a week, and I had such a relaxing time, it was exactly what I needed. While I was there we did a few horse-related things and seeing as I'm lacking in horsey friends in RL to relay my trip to, I thought I'd come on here instead.

The first day I was there we went to OH's local point-to-point where he was bookying and I made my inaugural appearance as his clerk :D safe to say, I was a pro (I've had a bit of practice at the trotting). It was quite busy and he kept wandering off so I ended up taking bets and paying out as well. He's talked about me being his clerk once he buys pitches at Cheltenham Festival and Aintree GN meeting next year so it was good practice! The racing was good and I really enjoyed the two children's races at the start of the day, the kids were tiny and rode finishes like proper jockeys!

Due to the snow we couldn't do anything with his 2yo that's in training all week, or with the other two that he's slowly started breaking in. We did spend the week checking on all the mares and geldings though, and when we were up the yard I got to play with my boy Parker quite a bit :) OH says he's stubborn and not one for much fuss - this is the same horse that was giving me kisses over his stable door and letting me de-frizz his fluffy mane

The (equine-related) highlight of the trip though was checking out the field that we plan to build our own yard on. I didn't realise, but there is already an enclosed yard in the field that OH's dad keeps pigeons on (the yard is a lot bigger than he needs though, and he is in the process of moving his pigeons to the racing yard). Other than pigeon lofts, it's completely empty - basically a shell. But it's certainly a good starting point. We walked the field boundary and made rough plans for how we're going to divide it into paddocks, and also decided on how we're going to lay the entrance/lane up to the yard from the road. To say I'm excited is an understatement! Big Ears is going to have a proper yard to live on, and it's only a two minute walk to the racing yard where OH's dad is based, so I can have use of his jogging track. There's also an enclosed ash-type level area below the field which isn't used by anyone, so OH thinks it will be useful to long-rein youngsters and it's somewhere I can lunge my girl (and others that will probably be broken to saddle - OH has agreed that the best thing we can do for his racehorses is break them to ride so that they have a potential future elsewhere).

So all in all, a good week! And then I returned to work at the racing yard to find horses have come and gone, Big Mac is going under saddle like a trooper and everybody has missed me :p

Thanks for reading!

Thank you :)

It's not going to be anything fancy, but it's going to be ours. OH has always had to share his yard with his old man, who calls the shots, and I've always had to share a yard with my old man, who calls the shots. Neither of us agree with the respective shots being called (!) but we have roughly the same ideas about breaking and training horses so hopefully we can make a proper go of it together :)
