Just got back from the yard - and I have to face up to it. My lab thinks he is a pony. He's only really started being a stable lad in the last week, as we have moved yards to a dog friendly place, but I have serious concerns that he's having an identity crisis ;

- he eats healthy hooves from the bucket sharing with pony,
-he eats haylage while lying in it, again sharing with very patient pony,
- he does his stuff in the stable on top of pony's,
- when I take the boy out for some grass, lab eats grass nose to nose with him,
- when the boy has a drink, so does lab,
- he runs about under the boy, who just looks at him and carries on (eating).

It was the dog barking at Shy's nose and Shy just telling him to grow up that made me want Shy even more when I first saw him ! It's lovely to watch, and I'm much calmer about it now, as they seem to be best friends. The only thing my boy does is lays his ears back quickly if the lab steals his blade of grass

Any other doggie/horsey best friends ? :p sm xx

I think the eating thing is a lab thing
I have two choc labs and they both like going up the yard, Frank is a bit cautious but still enjoys it (he loves to eat things that are lying around) :D

Yup, eating anything...... Unfortunately he also tries to empty the wheelbarrow when I've just filled it up. He hasn't got the hang of things yet !

errr. My friends boxer loves my boy a little too much. I havent had to clean his sheath for the last two summers. Its so very very wrong, and no I dont have pictures.

bleurgh blerugh bleurgh!!  that is so disgusting! ahah well thats dogs for you... i have a lab and he too will eat anything :D

We have a weimeraner (sp?) at our yard who adores her owner's gelding and has to be wherever he is. Has to have a carrot if he's having them. She goes in the school doing circuits too, looks out for him whenever he's off at hunter trials and can recognise him as he goes past on the course. When he was on box rest and was doing walking round the stable block of an evening to stretch his legs she would lap round at speed ahead of him, it was very funny to watch. And he's really good and careful around/with her.

I have a Lab stable lad as well, he foal watches, he shares carrotts with the stallion, he loves making sugar beet, jumps in the wheel barrow for rides and goes to the loo on top of mares but does choose a diffrent stable everyday, we have to guess.

My brown lab was way above being a stable dog. She came with us once when sis was jumping our mare in a schooling session. She lost interest very quickly. After we had finished and put the mare out, we took the dogs for a walk in the wood. The lab, who walked on that route almost every day of her life, veered off the path and found several fallen branches to jump over. I'm sure she only did it to show us that she was just as good at jumping as any boring horse, she never bothered to jump over stuff in this way on any other occasion. On the other hand, when we'd only had the mare a short time, the same lab, who wasn't supposed to be with us, gave that mare a lead past some very scarey cows and puddles.

Stan is getting quite good at the cross country jumps come to think of it. Shame Shy isn't yet ready ! He could learn a thing or two from stable stan. I love the hitching a lift in the barrow - might try that. Lab btw, is telling me it's time for the boy's tea *sigh*.. a life ruled by animals. sm x

This is so funny because my pony thinks he is a lab. His happiest times are following me (or anyone else around), slobbering over them and getting cuddles!!!

He looks enviously at the cushy lifestyle my labs have and thinks that if only he could disguise himself well enough he too could spend winter evenings on the sofa by the fire!!!

Maybe the soul gods got your dog and my horse mixed up!!

it sounds like they may well have done ! Tonight, Stanley went into the field and herded Shy away from the haylage towards the gate so I could bring them both in for yet another bucket of healthy hooves.... will have to get them on camera.

Mind you, this is also a dog who has a ferret as another best friend, and likes nothing better than to be nibbled by her, and walk around with her on his back. God aren't labs the best !
