Well today Jill's leg is looking soooo much better! The swelling has gone down to less than it has ever been. She is looking so much perkier and the major wound appears to be finally starting to heal up. All the other wounds have sealed and are looking terrific!

This is her just before I cleaned it and repacked it:

Thank you - believe it or not but it was so much worse. Yesterday I was actually really starting to worry about her, but today I am happy with the progress. Probably a long way to go before it all heals properly and hoping we have no set-backs as my vet is 3,500 miles away in Belgium for the whole of October

Forgive me Tia. As you know I've been "away" a while from the forum and am therefore playing catch-up.

What happened to Jill?

I don't know exactly what happened but the result was that Jill ended up in a different field with her legs caught up in the bottom of the stock fencing

. This happened last week and it has been a real up and down 7 days. The wire had to be cut to release her as it had noosed around her foot. On freeing her we took her back up to the barn where it became obvious that she had gone into shock. She then started to colic. It was all pretty worrying as she is such a dear little pony and has never had a day's illness in her life. These little Arabs are so sensitive and the leg became secondary for a good couple of hours.

She finally pulled through and then we went back to having the leg as the primary concern.

The vet thought that there was the strong possibility that her leg may die as he couldn't feel any pulse running through the lower part of the leg. Her foot was cold and she couldn't stand at all on it.

I was injecting her with LA Penicillin (I dislike penicillin) and her leg appeared to get better - heat returned and I could feel her pulse the whole way down the leg. However a few days on and it blew up and that's when the gash became a huge hole! Have been packing it and she has been on bute and I have just moved her onto a broad spectrum anti-B - this does seem to be working and infection appears to have been kept at bay.

Today there was a marked improvement - the leg looks 70% better than it has all week so here's hoping all comes good in the end.

That looks much better than what I was expecting, after what you described yesterday.

Bless her - I really hope she comes through ok for you.

Chin Up.

Blimey! What a worry. Looking at the pictures I would never have thought the injury was potentially life threatening.

I really hope she recovers fully. Poor little mite.

It does look much better, however you are only seeing one side of her leg. The other side is ripped to beggary and around her pastern is all ripped. These areas I was not particularly concerned with though as although they were more than superficial, they certainly aren't as bad as the one major wound.

She's looking good this morning - thanks for all your nice thoughts.

Poor girl, the wounds dont look too bad, she looks a little wooley (hair) around them. I would shave around the nasty one to keep out inflection.

Good luck with her
