Morning all, thought I would give you an update on how my mare is doing after her being so unwell a couple of weeks ago. Its only been a short while but I can see her improving. She is so much better in herself which is a huge relief. I had the vet out yesterday to check her over and he too can see a great improvement. She is now on grass 24/7 with a feed in the morning but he said I could reduce her feed in a couple of weeks to nothing. Phew!!

Oh she has AmyMay. Most definitely. I have a feeling now this post is going to turn into a nasty criticism. I don't want that. I have been through more than enough. I am very sensitive on this subject. She has put on allot of weight. Perhaps its the pictures.

No, that is absolutely not what I was doing. I was just giving you my honest opinion - which I thought you may appreciate. It was not my intention to offend you.

She's certainly got pleny of grass in the field, which is super. Are you rugging her at night? Is she back in work now?

I know how worried you've been about her.

I'm going to say that I think she has put on some weight m'duck. Most noticeable over the rump area.

Having been in the same situation, I found that the pictures nearly always look different to the reality

. You and your vet can see what is really happening, so hang on in there, keep doing what you're doing, and post piccies again in a couple of weeks

I know. You have, I must say, been the first to step in with help and support through all this. But, there are other impressionable people on here who type before they think and pick up on what you say and run it into the ground.

She has perked up a huge amount and her covering is improving everyday. Its the first thing the vet sad when he came to see her. She's off the antibiotics which is great. No need for anymore bloods to be taken either. She isn't rugged during the sunny days as she is sweating. She is at night though and I kept her in last night.

I will again post a couple of pics in a couple of weeks.

Thanks Mrs Mozart, I was just saying the exact same thing. I think I will wait another couple of weeks and hope that the pictures reveal a more plumper mare.

I think maybe the recent pic isn't the best but, I would say as your horse has been pretty poorly I wouldn't expect an amazing change in 2 weeks anyway to be honest. I think it looks as if she has a bit more covering on her rump and, I am sure given say another two weeks there will be a more visble change.

I really hope so LadyT - I have literally been watching her like a hawk. I have taken this week off to stay with her, groom her, give her treats and just make her feel better in herself. She hasn't been in work since she was unwell. I just wanted her to chill out and eat for a while.

I think 50% of recovery is providing lots of love and attention. She is moving in the right direction which is what I want to see. Yes you are right, a couple of weeks isn't allot but as all of you were so supportive I wanted to keep you in the loop.

Two weeks isn't a long time. I know she probably lost the condition in a really short time but putting it back on is a long slow job. To be honest my first thought was that she hadn't put any weight on, but on closer look she seems to have filled out a bit over her wither area and rump. Her coat also looks a lot better which is always a good sign. As long as you and your vet can see an improvement in her that is the main thing, I bet if you post more pics in another 2 weeks she will have improved even more. Good luck with her.

Thanks MurphysMinder her rump and withers are the first things the vet noticed too. The first photo is awful, it still upsets me. Flamin' horses!

It's a very good idea to keep photos of her progress. Try to take them from different angles, such as straight on from behind, just her rump and side on. Try to take make sure the sun is shining on the side you are photographing as it will highlight her contours better. Also take photos every couple of weeks from the same angles as before, it makes it easier to compare with the previous photos. I have been in your situation and found being able to compare the stages of his progress invaluable. Good luck

I think her rear looks more covered- there are less points! It may well be that the pic was taken as the mare inhaled/exhaled making her look a little more ribby than in real life. Just keep doing what your doing and in a few months time she will look sooo much better you will be looking at the before photos with such suprise. Good luck and keep us updated.

If she has been on antibiotics I would be tempted to put her on a course of Pink Powder from NAF, it is excellent at setting the gut back up after things like this and is a real pick me up I have found. It isnt too expensive either.
Good luck

I'm sorry I am with AmyMay, you are definately doing the right thing though, my mare improved no end living on the grass with just one feed a day. I did find Pink Powder helped as well but letting them relax and eat constantly is the best medicine!

She looks shiny in the picture y.day so that definately shows she is feeling MUCH better in herself! keep taking loads of pictures to compare, the differences do become very obvious! try and get a shot of her with her head up as its handy to see how the neck develops etc.

As the others have said - two weeks isn't a long time but then again you wouldn't want her piling on wieght to quickly either. I think her back end looks more covered and she looks shinier which would indicate she is feeling better in herself. Keep up the good work and more piccy's in a week or two please - we won't recognise her!!!

I personally think there is a fair amount of difference - she definitely has more coverage over her bum, and IMO is less defined over her withers and ribs too

Obviously two weeks is not a long time at all, but I would say you are on the right track for sure - and she is looking nice and shiny, which is always a good sign! Good luck with her

Oh thanks so much guys - you are all really encouraging! Its good to know you think I am on the right track. Seeing her everyday means I don't get to see the improvement (if you know what I mean).

I will most certainly post a some more pics in a couple of weeks.
